Shincheonji Volunteer Group Cheongpyeong Branch conducts ‘Visiting Health Doctor, Five Senses Tour' experience with Defoliant Veterans' Association of Korea
Numerous media outlets in South Korea have been reporting on the many activities conducted by Shincheonji Volunteer Group for nationwide community development in the emerging 'post-COVID' era. Recently, on the 13th April, Shincheonji Volunteer Group Cheongpyeong Branch (Director Seong-min Cho) held its 'Visiting Health Doctor, Five Senses Tour' experience with members of the Gapyeong Branch of the Defoliant Veterans' Association of Korea at the 'Water Garden' located in Joan-myeon, Namyangju city.
The Defoliant Veterans' Association of Korea is comprised of war veterans who were damaged by Agent Orange (herbicide for killing plants) sprayed by the U.S. military during the Vietnam War, and currently has a total of 168,000 members.
Members, with an average age of 71, suffer from headaches, dizziness, chest pain, and skin diseases, and are demanding increased support from the government.
The Cheongpyeong branch of Shincheonji Volunteer Group and the Defoliant Veterans' Association of Korea began partnering last year while conducting environmental cleanup operations weeding Yongchu Valley under the mountain restoration project.
Shincheonji Volunteer Group began partnering with the Defoliant Veterans' Association of Korea on the 'Visiting Health Doctor, Five Senses Tour' programme after listening to their various hardships.
The event on the 13th included a singing contest, taekwondo learning, traditional games, and word quizzes, to provide some relief to the members of the Defoliant Veterans' Association.
In particular, Shincheonji Taekwondo instructors gave a detailed demonstration, and the seniors changed into white outfits and learned each step one by one.
Volunteer Moon-sook Kim of the Cheongpyeong Branch who participated in this volunteer activity said, “I came to understand the patriotic hearts of the Association members through today's time together. It was an enjoyable experience.”
Young-soo Kwon, a member of the Defoliant Veterans' Association, expressed his gratitude, saying, “I am grateful to Shincheonji Volunteer Group for providing this unexpected event. It was nice to be able to spend good time with my friends in one place.”
Shincheonji Volunteer Group Cheongpyeong Branch Manager Seong-min Cho said in his address, “It is an honour to meet those who sacrificed and devoted their lives for their country”, and, “I'm so happy to be meeting the members of the Defoliant Veterans' Association today.”
Meanwhile, in addition to the medical 'Visiting Health Doctor' programme, Shincheonji Volunteer Group Cheongpyeong branch is carrying out numerous other volunteer activities for the betterment of the local community, including the 'Wall Story' programme, a urban project for the rejuvenation of dilapidated murals.
