Shincheonji Volunteer Group Namsan Branch visits Wolmido and Yeongjong Islands with Incheon Association of Persons with Disabilities
Numerous media outlets in South Korea have been reporting on the many activities conducted by Shincheonji Volunteer Group for community development nationwide in the emerging 'post-COVID' era. Recently, on the 30th March, Shincheonji Volunteer Group Namsan Branch held the '9th Visiting Health Doctor' programme, in conjunction with the 'Five Senses Tour' project, with 10 members of the Incheon Association of Persons with Disabilities in Wolmido and Yeongjongdo Islands.
The 'Visiting Health Doctor' programme, which marks its 9th year this year, provides free medical services to foreign workers, who are often caught in the medical blind spot, the elderly living alone, and the underprivileged. This particular programme was conducted in conjunction with the 'Five Senses Tour' project, which serves to remove the societal barriers between people with disabilities and people without and establishes a support structure for increased communication, understanding and the overcoming of physical and mental barriers.
The schedule included a ride on the Wolmi Sea Train and a visit to Jjajangmyeon Museum (national favourite black bean soy noodles), located at the heart of Chinatown, followed by customised sports activities for people with disabilities at the gym. The beneficiaries enjoyed various team games, including board flipping, and received professional teaching from a Shincheonji athlete on safe and proper exercise.
The volunteers and beneficiaries then boarded a boat and moved to Yeongjongdo Island, where they had time to practise their drawing skills.
Hae-tae Yang, head of the Incheon Association of Persons with Disabilities, said, “It was a joyful day which the Association members spoke highly of.”
Dong-haik Lim, honorary president of the Korea Knowledge Forum, said, “Thank you for achieving something that even my own children would find challenging.”
Meanwhile, in addition to the medical 'Visiting Health Doctor' programme, Shincheonji Volunteer Group Namsan branch is carrying out numerous other volunteer activities for the betterment of the local community, including the 'Wall Story' programme for the rejuvenation of dilapidated murals; 'Beautiful Seniors!' programme to provide cultural activities for seniors' overall wellbeing; 'Green Nature' programme for environmental protection; 'Love for Country and Peace-Sharing' programme for the common realisation of peace; and services for veterans of the 6.25 Korean War.
