Numerous media outlets in South Korea have been reporting on the many activities conducted by Shincheonji Volunteer Group for nationwide community development, particularly during the emerging 'post-COVID' era. Most recently, from the 17th to the 23rd May, Shincheonji Volunteer Group Cheongju branch carried out its 'Wall Story' service in a residential area located in Sudong, Sangdang district, Cheongju city.

Shincheonji Volunteer Group's 'Wall Story' is an urban regeneration project that restores dilapidated murals through drawings and paintings, depicting characteristics specific to local regions and the stories of local residents on murals. The themes and pictures designed on the murals are decorated at the request of the beneficiaries.

On the 23rd, the last day of the volunteer service, heads of social organisations such as Yong-hyun Cho, president of the New Era Senior Citizens Association (Chungbuk branch), and Kwang-shik Lim, director of the Defoliant Veterans' Association of Korea (Chungbuk branch), visited the site and shared their work.

The theme of the completed mural was 'memories' that recalls the childhood of the beneficiary, Mr. Kim. An official from the Cheongju branch of Shincheonji Volunteer Group said, “The senior residents of Sudong have lived here for about 40 years.”

The mural, which was completed over a week of work, was filled with warm stories, such as families gathering to eat songpyeon (traditional Korean food made of rice powder) on Chuseok (national holiday), and children laughing. Mr. Kim's home, which used to be desolate because of the narrow road nearby, has now become brighter and more colourful.

Mr. Kim, who looked around the finished mural, said, “I'm so grateful and thankful the dark and crumbling wall has been made beautiful. I really like the paintings.”

Yong-hyun Cho, president of the New Era Senior Citizens Association (North Chungcheong branch), who participated in the service that day, said, “Which villagers would dislike having the murals beautified this way?”

Mu-gyeom Je, head of Shincheonji Volunteer Group Cheongju branch, said, “Volunteering is an activity that, like the light, rain, and air, transcends religious boundaries to spread love. Shincheonji Volunteer Group Cheongju Branch will continue to spread warmth with residents through various volunteer services.”

Meanwhile, the Cheongju branch of Shincheonji Volunteer Group continues to provide various community servicessuch as the 'Green Nature' environmental clean-up service, 'More the Better' emotional wellbeing programme through sharing companion plants, 'Pinky Promise' for the promotion of emotional wellbeing for people with disabilities, and 'Visiting Health Doctor' for the medically vulnerable.
