Shincheonji Volunteer Group Gangneung Branch (Director Geun-chang Lee) held the 9th 'Visiting Health Doctor, Five Senses Tour' with people with disabilities at the Workplace of Love on the 30th of last month.
The 'Visiting Health Doctor' programme, which marks its 9th year this year, provides free medical services to foreign workers, who are often caught in the medical 'blind spot', the elderly living alone, and the underprivileged.
This particular programme was conducted in conjunction with the 'Five Senses Tour' project, which serves to remove the societal barriers between people with disabilities and people without and establishes a support structure for increased communication, understanding and the overcoming of physical and mental barriers.
This year, a special sports programme tailored to people with disabilities was organised and implemented by Shincheonji football experts.
On that day, the 33 beneficiaries employed at the Workplace of Love, a social welfare organisation affiliated to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Chuncheon, spoke of the difficulties they have experienced in their fish hook threading business since COVID-19 struck and the economy took a turn for the worse.
Shincheonji Volunteer Group Gangneung Branch conducted this programme in order to provide the beneficiaries with a brief escape from the daily grind of life. The total length of the sea train circulating through Jeongdongjin Station, Mukho Station, Donghae Station, Chuam Station, and Samcheok Beach Station was 53 km.
One beneficiary who experienced the emerald-coloured waters said, “The weather and the colours of the sea were so beautiful.” Another beneficiary said, “I really want to come back here with my mother.”
It is an ordinary trip for anyone who has flexibility of time and finances, but the fact they felt so moved by the experience reflects the need for a shift in prioritising the needs of people with disabilities in South Korea.
Volunteer Myeong-sook Kim said, “Before meeting with the members of Workplace of Love, I mulled over what disabilities they might have and how I could help them. I had a lot of worries.” She continued, “After meeting them, what I perceived is the difference that showing a little interest and understanding can make on the other person.”
The highlight of the event was the 'Football I Can' programme, where Shincheonji Volunteer Group Gangneung branch members, who were former footballers, taught coordination, basic dribbling, and penalty kicks to teach the basic movements. A beneficiary who developed a newfound interest in football through this customised football programme, said, “I waited most for this opportunity.”
Jong-won Choi, President of Workplace of Love, said, “We enjoyed ourselves as our members rode the sea train and played football. I hope they will continue to experience joy through sports activities like today.”
Geun-chang Lee, head of Shincheonji Volunteer Group Gangneung Branch, said, “Through sharing our talents and implementing the sports programme, we seek to increase the mental and physical satisfaction of people with disabilities. We can overcome our limitations, rely on and encourage each other with hope.”
Shincheonji Volunteer Group Gangneung Branch is planning various services for people with disabilities in the future, including regular programmes and projects.
