When is the 'Great Day of Wrath' in Revelation 6?
📰The Bible is one of the best-selling and most widely distributed books in history, yet it is also considered to be among the least understood. The Bible, which is referred to as the New Covenant and Promise of God, in which 'the way to heaven and salvation' is presented, differs in theologians' interpretations that make it difficult to understand. These differing interpretations have been the cause of the rise of denominations with each one establishing their own doctrine. With the increase in online church services and gatherings resulting from the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, there has been growing interest in the comparison of various church doctrine. This paper, therefore, attempts to provide readers with the opportunity to compare differing Biblical teachings without interpretation. Among a host of online sermons and Bible-based teachings, the contrasting doctrine between the established Church and Shincheonji Church of Jesus, which has drawn public interest throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, is hereby compared and summarised. Best efforts have been made to provide a summary of Shincheonji Church of Jesus' understanding of the Bible. Judgment as to what is right or wrong is left to the reader’s discernment.
Because God is the Creator of all things, He loves and cares for creation more than anyone else. God's will is not to destroy all He has created, but to restore all nations back to Him in Revelation 22:2, and, as written in 1 Timothy 2:4, to save all people.
On the other hand, Satan has no love for creation because he did not create it, and he feels no hurt despite its brokenness.
Established denominations sometimes interpret the great day of wrath as a cosmic tribulation in which, according to Revelation 6:12-14, the sun will turn black, the moon will become blood red, the stars in the sky will fall to the ground and the sky will dry up. This is because they apply a literal interpretation to the term removed, believing that the actual stars in the sky will fall on the earth.
There are similar prophecies in the Old Testament. In Isaiah 34:4, it is said that all the heavenly hosts including the sun, moon and stars will pass away; and in Joel 2:31, it is said that the sun will be darkened and the moon will turn blood red. However, at the first coming, when these prophecies in the Old Testament were fulfilled, was there an actual cosmic tribulation? There was no such thing.
Today, as at the first coming, the sun, moon and stars of the physical sky still remain. So, the sun, moon and stars here are not literal, but spiritual sun, moon and stars.
In Genesis 37:9-11, Jacob's family, who were chosen by God, were likened to the sun, moon and stars. Therefore, Jacob's tent, where Jacob's family lived, are like the sun, moon and stars of heaven. Furthermore, the sun, which is the source of light, refers to a pastor who preaches the word; the moon that receives the light of the sun and reflects that light is an evangelist who receives and delivers the word of the shepherd; and the many stars are the many believers.
As the words of this prophecy come true, the church of Jesus, which has existed for about 2,000 years, will come to an end, and it will mark the greatest event for believers everywhere. This day is the 'great day of wrath' in the main text.
Then, let's find out why this great day of wrath came when the sun, moon and stars fell.
As recorded in Revelation 1, the tabernacle of the seven golden lampstands and the seven stars that were promised to appear to prepare the way for the Lord, have appeared. This Tabernacle Temple was chosen by God and came into being according to the promise, and its pastors, evangelists and congregation are like the sun, moon and stars in heaven; and the Tabernacle Temple where God resides is like heaven where God resides.
However, when, according to the words of Revelation 2 and 3, those who were chosen by God broke God's covenant and betrayed, Jesus chose a shepherd once again and had him send prophetic letters to the seven messengers who betrayed, urging them to repent.
Therefore, in Revelation 6:15-17, the kings and princes of the earth who cried out that the great day of wrath had come and who asked to be hidden from the wrath of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb, were people who once belonged to heaven but then betrayed. They refer to the shepherds and congregation of the tabernacle (tent) of heaven who were destroyed and belonged to the earth. Therefore, the great day of wrath in the text is not a time of cosmic tribulation, but a time of destruction that judges the chosen people who betrayed.
In summary, the great day of wrath in the Bible refers to the time of destruction today, the time of Revelation's fulfilment, when the chosen people who betrayed were judged.
"It reads, 'For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can stand withstand it?' In this great day of wrath, who will be able to escape this universal tribulation?"
Pastor B, Presbyterian Church
"The stars in the sky fell to the earth like figs fall from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind, and all its unripened fruits fall to the ground. Even the mountains and the seas become the subjects of judgment that cannot escape the wrath of the Lamb who sits on the throne above them, and they suffer dreadful wrath and doom. This is how the end times look. And it is said that this great day of wrath will come at the time of the great tribulation."
Pastor C, Holiness Church
"For the great day of their wrath has come, and who can withstand it?' This shows an image of God's imminent judgment which is the destruction of the cosmos. God will shake the stars in the sky like an unripe fig tree, and the stars will just fall away. How frightening. How frightening is this wrath of the Lamb?"
