What are the Biblical Characteristics of Speaking in Tongues and Why were Tongues Given? (Shincheonji Church)
📰The Bible is one of the best-selling and most widely distributed books in history, yet it is also considered to be among the least understood. The Bible, which is referred to as the New Covenant and Promise of God, in which 'the way to heaven and salvation' is presented, differs in theologians' interpretations that make it difficult to understand. These differing interpretations have been the cause of the rise of denominations with each one establishing their own doctrine. With the increase in online church services and gatherings resulting from the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, there has been growing interest in the comparison of various church doctrine. This paper, therefore, attempts to provide readers with the opportunity to compare differing Biblical teachings without interpretation. Among a host of online sermons and Bible-based teachings, the contrasting doctrine between the established Church and Shincheonji Church of Jesus, which has drawn public interest throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, is hereby compared and summarised. Best efforts have been made to provide a summary of Shincheonji Church of Jesus' understanding of the Bible. Judgment as to what is right or wrong is left to the reader’s discernment.
In 1 Corinthians 14:9, it is written that if one does not speak intelligible words with the mouth, it is like speaking into the air. In the same chapter, in verse 11, it is written that intelligible words are the same as a foreign language.
In Acts 2:1, the Holy Spirit came upon Jesus' disciples who were gathered in Mark's 'upper room' 2,000 years ago on the day of Pentecost. At that time, the disciples who were filled with the Holy Spirit began to speak in the tongues of different languages. Seeing this, Jews throughout Asia, Mesopotamia and other countries asked, “Aren't all these who are speaking Galileans?" Amazed, they asked, "Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?” Through this event, 3,000 people repented and came to believe in Jesus. The dialect the disciples spoke was the language belonging to each peoples.
The purpose of speaking in tongues through the Holy Spirit at Pentecost was a sign necessary to help believers obey and believe in Jesus 2,000 years ago (Romans 15:18).
In 1 Corinthians 13:8, it is written that speaking in tongues and prophesying at the first coming were only knowing in part, but that when completeness comes, all tongues and prophecies would cease and disappear. That is to mean that when perfection comes, what is in part ends. It is true that the disciples, after receiving the Holy Spirit at Pentecost at the first coming, spoke in tongues and prophecies in the language of each peoples as the Holy Spirit made them speak. However, the Holy Spirit at Pentecost did not clearly testify to the explanation (meaning) of the prophecies made by Jesus, which are the secrets of the kingdom of heaven that Jesus said would be fulfilled in future. So they only knew in part.
On the other hand, in John 14-16, it is clearly recorded that when the Spirit of truth, promised by Jesus does come, he would guide people into all truth and clearly make known (testify) everything that had been spoken in secret (parables) (John 16:13). Since we are not believers living at the time of the first coming, but believers living at the time of the Lord's Second Coming, we are not waiting for the Holy Spirit that already came on the day of Pentecost, but for the Holy Spirit of truth that clearly testify about the promise recorded in the New Testament.
Also, as John 14:17 records that the Spirit of truth would be with you and in you, Jesus reminds us that the Spirit of truth will speak through a promised shepherd (pastor) to make all things known.
In Revelation 10, the Holy Spirit of truth gives John the revelation that he received from Jesus. After that, John must prophesy again to peoples, nations, languages and kings. However, today when this prophecy is fulfilled, the 'new John', who sees and hears the events of the war of Revelation, becomes the promised pastor that Jesus chooses to testify the reality of the fulfilment of the New Testament promise to all the churches.
Just as Amos 3:7 records, God never works without first revealing His secret to His servants the prophets. The New Testament promise that Jesus made 2,000 years ago is being made known through the promised pastor, whom the Spirit of truth is with. What was recorded in secret has been revealed.
The promised pastor of New Heaven New Earth, who saw and heard the events of the war in Revelation through Jesus, testifies to the fulfilment of today's prophecy through the revealed word of Revelation.
In 1 Corinthians 14:19, it is better to speak five words with an enlightened heart than ten thousand words in tongues. Therefore, the most important thing we must seek in this era is the fulfilment of the New Testament promise.
