What is the True Meaning of the 'Light' Created on Day One in Genesis 1? (Shincheonji Church)
On 7th April 2021, Cheonji Ilbo (Cheonji Daily) published an article, in Korean, entitled, “What is the True Meaning of the 'Light' Created on Day One in Genesis 1? (Shincheonji Church)". This is a translation of that report.

📰The Bible is one of the best-selling and most widely distributed books in history, yet it is also considered to be among the least understood. The Bible, which is referred to as the New Covenant and Promise of God, in which 'the way to heaven and salvation' is presented, differs in theologians' interpretations that make it difficult to understand. These differing interpretations have been the cause of the rise of denominations with each one establishing their own doctrine. With the increase in online church services and gatherings resulting from the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, there has been growing interest in the comparison of various church doctrine. This paper, therefore, attempts to provide readers with the opportunity to compare differing Biblical teachings without interpretation. Among a host of online sermons and Bible-based teachings, the contrasting doctrine between the established Church and Shincheonji Church of Jesus, which has drawn public interest throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, is hereby compared and summarised. Best efforts have been made to provide a summary of Shincheonji Church of Jesus' understanding of the Bible. Judgment as to what is right or wrong is left to the reader’s discernment.
What is the light of the first day and the great light that is created on the fourth day to govern the day? Does it mean that God created the sun twice? It is recorded that, on the first day, evening and morning appeared, then how can the morning appear before the sun is created on the fourth day? If Genesis 1 is viewed as the creation of the natural physical world, one will find too many contradictions. This is because it can not be understood as simply physical creation.
In the words from John 1:1-4, the word from the beginning is God, and there is life in the word, and this life is the light of all mankind. In Psalm 119:105, the word of the Lord is a lamp to one's feet, which is the light. Just as physical light gives life to all things and extinguishes darkness, spiritual light is the word of God that gives life to our souls. Just as a state without light is in darkness, ignorance without the word of God is spiritual darkness. For example, one who possesses knowledge can be said to be bright in their understanding of that particular field, while one who lacks knowledge is said to be in darkness.
Let's look at the spiritual meaning of Genesis 1:1-5. There are two heavens and earths in Genesis 1. It is recorded that, on the first day, the earth was in a state of chaos and emptiness, the sky was darkened and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. Just as it is recorded that man is formed of the earth, the earth that is created refers to a person. To say that this earth is chaotic means that one's heart (and mind) is confused with other doctrines, and is empty because the spirit of God has left that person's heart. Darkness over the surface of the deep means that the heavens are in a state of darkness (Jeremiah 4:28), and God, who is the light from heaven who once dwelled in the hearts of the chosen people, has now departed, leaving these people in a state without truth.
It means that the chosen people fell from heaven and returned to dust (became flesh); beginning with the Holy Spirit and returning to the flesh (Gal. 3:3). The earth refers to the world, as seen in Daniel 7:3 and 17. A true pastor who possesses the light-like truth was found from the world. Since light was found amid darkness, it is recorded that evening and morning had appeared. In other words, when the world is in a state of ignorance consumed by evil (dark) spirits, the first thing God does when beginning His work of recreation is to choose a pastor with the word of truth.
The content recorded in Genesis 1 can be found throughout the Old and New Testaments, including the epistles. In every era, God had to create a new era because the previous one had become corrupt and came to an end, as recorded in Genesis 1. Looking at Revelation 21 today, the creation of a new heaven and a new earth after the first heaven and first earth comes to an end is not the physical heaven and earth in the same way that the passing away of the sun, moon and stars is not literal. Here, creation is spiritual re-creation of those who have been spiritually reborn.
