What is the True 'War' in Matthew 24?
📰The Bible is one of the best-selling and most widely distributed books in history, yet it is also considered to be among the least understood. The Bible, which is referred to as the New Covenant and Promise of God, in which 'the way to heaven and salvation' is presented, differs in theologians' interpretations that make it difficult to understand. These differing interpretations have been the cause of the rise of denominations with each one establishing their own doctrine. With the increase in online church services and gatherings resulting from the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, there has been growing interest in the comparison of various church doctrine. This paper, therefore, attempts to provide readers with the opportunity to compare differing Biblical teachings without interpretation. Among a host of online sermons and Bible-based teachings, the contrasting doctrine between the established Church and Shincheonji Church of Jesus, which has drawn public interest throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, is hereby compared and summarised. Best efforts have been made to provide a summary of Shincheonji Church of Jesus' understanding of the Bible. Judgment as to what is right or wrong is left to the reader’s discernment.
In Matthew 24, Jesus said that the temple in Jerusalem would collapse without one stone being left on another. When the disciples heard Jesus' word, they asked when the temple would be destroyed and what signs would mark the last days of the Lord's Second Coming. Jesus' answer to his disciples' questions is recorded in Matthew 24.
Therefore, the contents of Matthew 24 record events that will take place at the Lord's Second Coming, and the location of this event is within the temple that will appear at the Lord's Second Coming. Therefore, the war in Matthew 24:7 is also referring to the war that takes place within the temple; that is, the church.
Firstly, in order to know about this war, we need to understand the two nations that the Bible speaks of. The two nations which are the targets of war are the kingdom of God - Jerusalem - and the kingdom of demons, Babylon.
Then, what kind of war is the spiritual war that takes place in the temple at the Second Coming? Reading the contents of Ephesians 6:10 onwards, it is recorded that our fight is not against flesh and blood. It is recorded that it is a fight against evil spirits, so it can be seen that this is a spiritual war. At this time, all the chosen people of God are told to armour themselves with the word of God, from top to bottom, in order to resist the devil's schemes.
Putting all this together, we can see that the war that takes place at the Second Coming of Jesus - that is, in the last days - is not a physical war, but a spiritual war. It is a war of doctrine fought between truth and lies.
In fact, if you look at the contents in Revelation, where the war that will take place at the time of the Lord's Second Coming is recorded in detail, the location of the war is described as 'heaven'.
This heaven is not literal heaven, but a war that takes place in the tabernacle, or temple of heaven, as is recorded in Revelation 13:6. In this temple, it is recorded that there will be a war between Michael and his angels - the army of God - and the dragon and his angels, the army of Satan.
In conclusion, it is recorded that the dragon is driven out after this war which God's army fought and won. There is a weapon with which the army of God fought and overcame. In Revelation 12:11, they fought and overcame with the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony. Because it is the word that was used to fight and overcome, this war is a war of doctrine.
