Who are the 'pregnant women' and 'nursing mothers' in Matthew 24?

by - 12:17

📰The Bible is one of the best-selling and most widely distributed books in history, yet it is also considered to be among the least understood. The Bible, which is referred to as the New Covenant and Promise of God, in which 'the way to heaven and salvation' is presented, differs in theologians' interpretations that make it difficult to understand. These differing interpretations have been the cause of the rise of denominations with each one establishing their own doctrine. With the increase in online church services and gatherings resulting from the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, there has been growing interest in the comparison of various church doctrine. This paper, therefore, attempts to provide readers with the opportunity to compare differing Biblical teachings without interpretation. Among a host of online sermons and Bible-based teachings, the contrasting doctrine between the established Church and Shincheonji Church of Jesus, which has drawn public interest throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, is hereby compared and summarised. Best efforts have been made to provide a summary of Shincheonji Church of Jesus' understanding of the Bible. Judgment as to what is right or wrong is left to the reader’s discernment.

"The 'pregnant women' and 'nursing mothers' are shepherds who teach with the seed of the word and give birth to chosen believers, and nurture these believers with this food"

As recorded in Psalm 78, Jesus came to speak about the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, which are mysteries from of old, in parables to be passed on to future generations (Matthew 13:34-35).

The content in Matthew 24 is a prophesy about the events at the Second Coming of the Lord that records spiritual, and not literal, events.

Let's find out who the 'woman' in the Bible is. In Galatians 4:19, Apostle Paul said, 'I am again in the pains of childbirth'. If we take these words as literal, it means that Apostle Paul was experiencing the pain of giving birth. If so, is it that Apostle Paul was a woman? Paul describes Timothy as a son whom he loves, and in 1 Corinthians 3:2, Paul describes him as a woman who nurses the believers. Isn't it strange that Apostle Paul, who was an unmarried bachelor, would have a son whom he would even breastfeed? If we interpret a 'woman' in the Bible in its literal form, understanding Apostle Paul's position would be very difficult.

God uses the physical to explain the spiritual. Therefore, a woman in the Bible can be divided into two types: a physical woman and a spiritual woman. A literal woman receives seed, gives birth to children and nurtures them. Using this physical analogy, what is the spiritual seed, and who is the spiritual woman? If the one giving physical seed is a man, then the one receiving the seed is a woman.

Luke 8:11 says that the seed is the word of God, and James 1:18 says that God gave us birth through the word of truth. The spiritual seed is the word of God. Then, who is the spiritual woman? As God said in Hosea 2:19-20, 'I will betroth (marry) you to me forever', it is the Holy Spirit who gives the seed, and the spiritual woman who receives this seed and gives birth to and nurtures spiritual children becomes a shepherd (pastor).

In this way, Paul was a shepherd who gave birth to, and nurtured, the chosen believers through the seed of God's word. Those who are pregnant and those who nurse in Matthew 24 are not literal pregnant women and mothers who breastfeed. The child-bearing process is used to refer to a pastor who, like a woman with physical children, gives birth to believers through the seed of God's word in Jerusalem, which represents the temple of God. A nursing mother refers to the pastor and evangelists who collectively feed spiritual milk to believers born of God's spiritual seed.

Why is there woe to those who bear children and those who are breastfed? It is because they fought in, and lost, the war described in Matthew 24. In order to understand this war, there are some things we need to know first.

Matthew chapter 23 records the events at the first coming of Jesus, which marked the destruction of physical Israel, Jerusalem. On the other hand, Matthew 24 speaks of the events at the time of the Lord's return - the signs of His coming and of the end of the age - and is a prophecy about the destruction of the Jerusalem of spiritual Israel.

The location of the main event is not the entire global community, but the spiritual Jerusalem; that is, the temple, or house, of God which has been destroyed without one stone left on another. The war in Matthew 24 explains this process.

Moreover, in Matthew 24, Jesus said that there would be wars between kingdoms and nations that would serve as signs of the Second Coming of the Lord, and that the abomination that causes desolation would stand in the holy place in the temple. The war at the time of the Lord's Second Coming is not a literal war, but spiritual warfare between the chosen people (Jerusalem) and their spiritual enemy (Babylon).

Therefore, the pastors of the temple of Jerusalem were banished from the temple of God, could no longer exercise their authority to testify the word, and were put into captivity. This is the woe that came to those who were pregnant and those who were breastfed.

This can also be seen within the book of Revelation of the New Testament, of which Matthew 24 is a summary. In Revelation 13, at the time of the Second Coming of the Lord, the dragon's group of destroyers - that is, the beast with seven heads and ten horns - invaded the temple of Jerusalem, which was the tabernacle of God. The pastors of this temple were destroyed and the church and its congregation were put to an end. Jesus spoke of woes to these people. The reason why there is woe to those who were pregnant and those who were breastfed is because they had betrayed and were destroyed by the Gentiles, and so their authority was taken away.

"There is woe to a 'nursing mother' and a pregnant woman because they can't run"
Korean Church

Pastor A of the Presbyterian Church
"Matthew 24 says, in that day, woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing. But when war broke out, those young women had to give birth to so many children yet evacuate. They are just infants. How many children can they take to escape and how can they live with them?

Where in the world can such a tragedy be found? That is why, on that day of departure, the unmarried, barren women are blessed because they have no children."

Pastor B of the Baptist Church
"A heavily pregnant woman with a child has a heavy body and cannot run well. Then, if she has a baby, it is difficult for her to flee alone and cannot abandon the child. So it's a story about going through hard times."
