Shincheonji Busan James tribe receives 'Korean Red Cross Presidential Award' for World Blood Donor Day

A little over a year ago, Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony (Shincheonji Church of Jesus) was certified as having the 'largest number of blood donors (18,819) by any single institution in the shortest period of time' by the Korea Record Institute following a group blood drive held from April 18 to May 4 2022. In addition, all 32,324 blood donation cards and vouchers that the donors subsequently received were gifted to those in need of emergency blood transfusions. That blood donation has made a significant contribution to the resolution of the domestic blood supply crisis in Korea that had come about as a result of the spread of the coronavirus Omicron variant.

Since then, Shincheonji Church of Jesus has developed a culture of blood giving amid a domestic blood crisis, and on the 26th June was awarded the Korean Red Cross Presidential Award in recognition of its humanitarian contribution to the development of blood banking on 'June 14 World Blood Donor Day'.

The '2023 Blood Donation Awards Ceremony in Commemoration of June 14 World Blood Donor Day' was conducted by the Busan Blood Centre of the Korean Red Cross on the 26th, with officials from both sides in attendance.

A total of 92,000 people participated in blood donation through two life-sharing campaigns, including 18,819 people for the first blood donation in April of last year, and 73,807 people for the second blood donation held in August and November of last year. A total of 3870 people participated as blood donors in the first and second rounds of the Busan James tribe.

On that day, Director Bong-gyun Kim said, “For a stable blood supply, we need to have a daily average of 7 days' supply, but at the time of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was barely a 3-day supply remaining, so it was difficult. We were able to overcome that crisis through the active participation of Shincheonji Church members in giving blood.”

Director Kim continued, 70% of blood donors in Korea are in their teens and 20s, but since the launch of the blood donation campaign of Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the increased participation rate of  blood donors in their 30s and 40s has had a positive effect.” He added, “Since blood cannot be manufactured artificially, donating blood is the only way to save life. I hope you (Shincheonji Church) will actively participate in future blood donation drives.”

Jeong-hwan Lim, the head of the tribe, said, “We were just doing what should be done as people, and we are grateful to receive this plaque of appreciation. We will continue to work hard to spread the culture of blood donation.”
