Shincheonji Youth Volunteer Group, 'We Are One', takes 'first steps' to achieving 70,000 blood donor target
[Cheonji Ilbo Incheon = Reporter Mi-jeong Kim] On the 27th, the youth volunteer group 'We Are One' of Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony (Shincheonji Church of Jesus, Chairman Man-hee Lee) launched its blood donation campaign with full vigour, drawing global attention.
That day marks the first step towards an unprecedented goal of collectively securing 70,000 donors within three months.
The organisation has demonstrated its will to preempt a national blood crisis through this blood donation campaign.
According to Shincheonji, the youth volunteer group 'We Are One' has 90,000 Korean and foreign youth members who belong to Shincheonji Church of Jesus (70,000 domestically and 20,000 overseas), with a total of 12 branches in Korea, the United States and the United Kingdom. It is one of the largest youth volunteer organisations in the world, consisting of youth from 75 countries.
An Inauguration ceremony was held at The-K Hotel Convention Center in Seoul on the 30th of July with the purpose of realising the biblical values of truth, love, and peace in order to repay the gift of life they have received from God and Jesus.
Today, they have all started donating blood at once and volunteering in earnest.
Until November, We Are One will collect blood donation books from donors, who have already agreed to donate their books to local hospitals for hospitals' benefits.
We Are One (Incheon) announced its decision to distribute blood donation books for about 3,000 people to several hospitals in the area, including Inha University Hospital, and is discussing schedules with the hospitals.
Ji-su Im (pseudonym, 28, female), who completed her blood donation at Songdo Blood Donor Centre today, said, “It's not difficult for me to donate blood. I'm grateful to know it may prove critical for someone. I do hope it will be of some benefit to someone.”
Young-cheol Choi (29, male), who was waiting to donate blood, said, “I volunteered for the first time when I became an adult, but I feel more proud to be making a donation with these volunteers, as I am a member of We Are One, rather than doing so alone.” “I've been actively involved because there may be times when my own family and close acquaintances will unexpectedly need blood.” He continued, “I think that anyone can participate in a blood donation when they are healthy and able. I hope that all young people will come forward, take part and help save life.”
Cheon-seok Jeong, head of the Shincheonji Matthew branch, said, “I hope that through this blood donation, life will no longer be compromised due to a lack of blood.”
Earlier, at the inauguration ceremony, We Are One announced an action plan to practise love for its neighbour and to solve global crises centred on the four goals of volunteering, a sustainable environment, world peace, and education.
Jin-yong Lee, head of We Are One (Incheon), said, “This is not the first time Shincheonji members have volunteered to donate blood. Even before the founding of We Are One, young people and ordinary members of the church have been participating in blood donation campaigns year-on-year.”
Meanwhile, Chairman Man-hee Lee of Shincheonji is known to have emphasised that giving blood is the greatest voluntary deed, and that the church members who have been born again through the blood of Jesus can save lives by donating blood.
In 2020, upon the request of the Korean Red Cross, about 6,000 members of Shincheonji Daegu Church went on-site to donate blood, and 4,000 of them actually donated blood.
At that time, their blood plasma donation was evaluated as evidence of their true spirit of volunteerism, silently working hard despite persecution, in an environment where Shincheonji was made subject to a witch-hunt by being labelled the main culprit of the coronavirus outbreak.
The blood plasma of Shincheonji Daegu Church members who recovered from COVID-19 without getting vaccinated has been used to develop a domestic COVID-19 treatment. This has drawn global attention.
It has been concluded that the response by the government and politicians at that time was unreasonable, as Shincheonji Daegu Church was recently acquitted by the Supreme Court of all charges of violating the quarantine measures at a third trial.
