Seoul-Gyeonggi branch of 'We Are One' Youth Volunteer Group steps in to aid flood recovery effort
[Cheonji Ilbo Gyeonggi = Reporter Ji-min Ryu] As more and more regions continue to be affected by record heavy rains in the metropolitan area, the Seoul-Gyeonggi branch of the Youth Volunteer Group 'We Are One' is stepping in to aid regional flood recovery efforts.
◆ Flood recovery service continued even during the holidays
On the 15th, a house in Sanbuk-myeon, Yeoju city, Gyeonggi province was flooded with dirt and waste following the collapse of a nearby mountain during a torrential downpour that filled the inside and outside of the house. A car parked in the yard was crushed by a pile of dirt and its scrapping was inevitable. 420 mm of heavy rain had fallen there during the torrential downpour.
Volunteers discarded the waste with their hands and a shovel as heavy equipment could not be used inside the house. Pores of sweat fell like rain in the hot and humid weather.
Yu-rim Seo (23, female) said, “It was very difficult to complete in one day because the house was submerged in soil, but we were able to complete it well thinking about the house owner.” “I am glad that I was able to complete it on time,” she said.
◆ Residents: “Thank you for your quick work”
On the 16th, basement homes and farmhouses in Palgok-dong, Sangnok district, Ansan city, Gyeonggi province were damaged after being pounded by heavy rains that left basement homes reeking in the heat, and farmhouses littered with broken plastic, fallen trees, waste and mud.
Volunteers carried damaged furniture out of a basement farmhouse. Trees and waste that were entwined in the farm were also separated and arranged one by one. Pores of sweat quickly formed as volunteers worked in the scorching heat. Residents expressed their gratitude to volunteers, saying, “Thank you for completing this job, which should have taken two days, in just one day.”
Volunteer Wan-yong Choi (28) said, “It was my first time volunteering for a flood recovery service, and I knew firsthand that the scale of the damage was really significant.”
This flood recovery service has been carried out in Seoul, Gyeonggi Province, Gwangju City, Seongnam City, Ansan City, and Yeoju City since the 10th in cooperation with Shincheonji Volunteer Group. Volunteers will continue to provide flood recovery and waste disposal services until the 20th.
Meanwhile, 'We Are One' is the largest youth volunteer group in Korea with 90,000 members, and was launched on July 30th. From the 26th onwards, 70,000 blood donations are expected to be made as part of an unprecedented group blood drive.
