What is the 'Key of the Kingdom of Heaven' that Jesus gave Peter in Matthew 16?
📰The Bible is one of the best-selling and most widely distributed books in history, yet it is also considered to be among the least understood. The Bible, which is referred to as the New Covenant and Promise of God, in which 'the way to heaven and salvation' is presented, differs in theologians' interpretations that make it difficult to understand. These differing interpretations have been the cause of the rise of denominations with each one establishing their own doctrine. With the increase in online church services and gatherings resulting from the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, there has been growing interest in the comparison of various church doctrine. This paper, therefore, attempts to provide readers with the opportunity to compare differing Biblical teachings without interpretation. Among a host of online sermons and Bible-based teachings, the contrasting doctrine between the established Church and Shincheonji Church of Jesus, which has drawn public interest throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, is hereby compared and summarised. Best efforts have been made to provide a summary of Shincheonji Church of Jesus' understanding of the Bible. Judgment as to what is right or wrong is left to the reader’s discernment.

In Matthew 16:18, Jesus renamed Simon to Peter and gave him the keys of the kingdom of heaven. What is this key of heaven?
Physically-speaking, a key is a tool that is used to unlock (open) and lock a door. In the Bible, the key of heaven refers to a key that can unlock and lock the door (gate) of heaven. Luke 11:52 reads, "Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering." As was said, this was the key of knowledge and wisdom. The key of heaven is the ability to unlock and lock the gates of heaven - that is, to open and lock the wisdom (knowledge) of the secrets of heaven.
When the master grants his key, it means that he grants part of his authority. Therefore, in Matthew 16:19, Jesus who is the owner of heaven grants authority to his disciples.

Then, what does it mean that to the person who has received the keys of heaven, whatever he binds on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever he looses on earth will also be loosed in heaven? To bind means to forbid, and to loosen means to allow. What the shepherd who has received the keys of the kingdom of heaven forbids is what Jesus forbids, and what he permits is what Jesus permits. It means that the pastor who has received the key of the kingdom of heaven has been given authority to permit, or forbid, one to enter the kingdom of heaven.
There are three secrets recorded in the book of Revelation. First is the mystery of the seven stars and the seven golden lampstands, which is the secret of betrayal recorded in Revelation 1:20. These entities are those who prepare the way for the second coming of Jesus.
Next, in Revelation 17:7, there is the mystery of the beast with seven heads and ten horns, which is the mystery of the destroyer. These entities are those who swallow up the tabernacle of the seven golden lampstands and destroy them.

On the other hand, there are the keys of death, hell and the keys of hell. Revelation 1:18 tells us that Jesus holds the keys of death and Hades. Here, death refers to Satan's power, and Hades refers to hell, which is Satan's dwelling place.
Just as the key to heaven is the wisdom to know the secrets of heaven, the key to hell gives authority to unlock and lock the gates of hell and the wisdom to know the secrets of hell. As is recorded in Revelation 9, this key of hell opens the Abyss where the angels of hell come out, and as in Revelation 20, it also binds Satan and imprisons him in the Abyss.
Shincheonji is overflowing with the correct testimony and with truth. This is because, as recorded in Revelation 3:12, the promised shepherd (pastor) of God and Jesus, who is the one who overcomes whom God and Jesus are with, is the shepherd who received the keys of the kingdom of heaven from Jesus. Shincheonji's Promised Pastor is the witness who saw and heard first-hand at the location of the events of war in Revelation. Furthermore, since he has received and eaten the revelation (revealed word) promised in Revelation chapter 10, he can testify the greatest truth of mankind - that is, the 66 books of the Bible. He is the messenger of Jesus who has received the key to the kingdom of heaven that Jesus gave.
As said in John 14:24, the words of Jesus 2,000 years ago were the words of God and truth. Today, the words of the Promised Pastor of Shincheonji are the words of God and Jesus. Therefore, meeting the promised pastor of Shincheonji and being born again of the seed of God makes one a child of God who receives the blessings of heaven and eternal life. On the other hand, considering the words spoken about Satan's false pastors in John 8, those born of the devil's seed become the devil's children and end up in the eternal fires of hell.
