“Chairman ManHee Lee Is Innocent” — Venerable Jingong Calls for His Release

Venerable Jingong, head monk of Gwaneumjeongsa Temple of the Jogye Order, held a one-person protest outside the Seoul Central District Court on 3rd September, calling for the release of Shincheonji Chairman ManHee Lee.
Standing for an hour with a picket sign, Venerable Jingong prayed for Chairman Lee’s release while reciting the Thousand Hands Sutra and Heart Sutra.
Explaining his decision to protest, he said he had long respected Chairman Lee as a religious leader and felt compelled to speak out after learning that he was being detained and tried.
The protest was met by several people who used loudspeakers to criticise Chairman Lee and confront Venerable Jingong. Rather than respond, he continued praying and said the experience strengthened his conviction that he should peacefully appeal for Chairman Lee’s release.

Venerable Jingong praised Chairman Lee’s leadership and peace activities, describing his courage and practical efforts for peace as remarkable. He questioned the fairness of continuing the trial while Chairman Lee remains in custody and urged his release.
He also highlighted the significance of Buddhist monks participating in one-person protests, calling on the legal community to uphold the principle that the law should be applied equally to all.
He concluded the protest by continuing his appeal for Chairman ManHee Lee's release and for peace.
