Buddhist Monk Holds 108-Bow Protest for Shincheonji Chairman ManHee Lee’s Medical Bail

Venerable Dae-ung Seok of San Kasia Temple held a one-person protest outside the Seoul Central District Court on the morning of 4th September, calling for religious freedom and human rights and praying for the medical bail of Shincheonji Chairman ManHee Lee.
Before the protest, Venerable Seok said, “The government must recognise freedom of religion and must not make hasty judgments about religion based on politics.” He added, “I have met the Chairman in person and felt his sincerity and leadership capable of leading many believers.”
At the court, Venerable Seok performed 108 bows for about an hour while chanting Buddhist prayers. His sign called for “a humanitarian judgment” for the 95-year-old Chairman Lee and “a trial without detention.”
“I prayed to God and Buddha with a heart for religious freedom and human rights,” Venerable Seok said, explaining that he had brought a cushion so he could “approach the protest with a reverent heart.”

Despite the presence of other protesters and YouTubers, Venerable Seok remained focused on his prayers. “Everyone will do their own thing, but it is important that our protest proceeds peacefully,” he said.
He concluded, “I believe that medical bail will be granted,” adding, “Shouldn’t we continue to raise our voices for religious freedom even after that? I, too, will continue to participate.”
