90-Year-Old Korean War Veteran Appeals for Bail for Fellow Veteran ManHee Lee
Seong-ryong Kim, a Korean War veteran in his 90s and Secretary General of the Seoul Dobong-gu Branch of the Korean War Veterans Association, has appealed for bail for ManHee Lee, chairman of Shincheonji Church of Jesus and a fellow Korean War veteran.
In a letter to the court, Kim highlighted their shared generation and military service, expressing concern about Chairman Lee's health and the difficulties faced by elderly veterans. He wrote, “I dedicated my youth to defending the country, and it breaks my heart to see someone who walked the same path imprisoned in their later years.”
Similar appeals have come from other veterans' groups. The Seoul branch recently held a press conference outside the Seoul Central District Court, urging consideration of Chairman Lee's age and health in the bail decision. The Songpa and Gangdong branches are also preparing petitions supporting bail.
The veterans' appeals emphasise humanitarian considerations and the importance of ensuring that elderly veterans can receive appropriate medical care while legal proceedings continue.
Kim appealed directly to the court: “The veterans who defended our country make this request. We hope you will make a humane judgment.”
