[Cheonji Ilbo Gwangju = Reporter Miae Lee] “The journey to school now feels like I'm immersed in a beautiful, magical tale.”
On the way to and from Yeocheon Elementary School located in Judong village, Jusam-dong, Yeosu city, Jeonnam province, the protagonists of 'The Little Prince' and 'The Wizard of Oz' are drawing attention.
It is thanks to 'The Wall Story', designed by the Jeonnam branch of Shincheonji Volunteer Group, which has been gradually painted since the 17th October.
About 150 volunteers from Mokpo, Yeosu, Suncheon, and Gwangyang came together to complete the 12-day schedule, and the wall of an old residential area near Yeocheon Elementary School has now been transformed into a story book filled with childhood innocence. In the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy, the Tin Woodman, the Little Prince and the Fox are painted, and red flowers and cute cats in consideration of the owner's grandmother's taste are set on the walls of the old house.
This particular 'wall story' is the first one created by volunteers from the eastern and western regions of Jeonnam province, for the purpose of breaking down the many barriers that divide society, including class, gender, religion, and politics. It's a mural story.
The response was positive enough that local residents also came out and participated in painting the murals.
The smiles on the faces of the volunteers were added to by an elderly woman, who stood nearby and expressed her admiration, saying, “How nice it is that you decorate a plain wall so beautifully and meticulously,” and she asked if she could also have the mural of her own house painted.
A volunteer from Mokpo, who joined this initiative, said, “I arrived here after driving over an hour to volunteer, but these words from a senior citizen have given me strength. I will paint more beautifully.”
A volunteer in his 30s who participated in Yeosu said, “I am very happy to be participating in a volunteer initiative that decorates with beautiful paintings.”
An official from the Jeonnam branch of Shincheonji Volunteer Group said, “Thank you to all the volunteers who participated as one and to the local residents who did not spare their help.”
Meanwhile, Shincheonji Volunteer Group's 'Wall Story', which breathes life into old, dilapidated walls, is being carried out for the ninth time this year throughout South Korea promoting the themes of love, peace, and childhood.
