To mitigate heat-related illnesses amid the stifling summer heat in Korea, where temperatures creeped up to the 40 degree Celsius mark this year, the Daejeon branch of the Shincheonji Volunteer Group conducted various activities for citizens and farmers.
On the 10th June, more than 20 volunteers personally handed out ice bottled water to residents and small shop owners, with one local store owner saying, “Standing around all day in a store without air conditioning is suffocating - it's a great comfort having someone bring me bottled water.”
A "Heat-Related Illness Prevention Guideline" was also produced by the Daejeon branch of the Shincheonji Volunteer Group and provided on-site for practical steps managing everyday life.
Later, on the 1st July, the Daejeon branch visited a rural farmland area to help older farmers harvest potatoes. Farmers, eager for assistance due to the relentless heatwave, said, “It felt like a thousand troops had descended from heaven.”
Louder calls for municipal assistance with heat prevention management are being sounded. An official from the Daejeon branch of the Shincheonji Volunteer Group said, “While heat waves are a natural hazard, the damage can be reduced through interest and action from the community,” and added, “We will continue to be attuned to the weather patterns.”
