Promoting Cemeteries Nationwide: Shincheonji Volunteer Group John Tribe Marks 'Patriots and Veterans Month' in Korea
In contemporary South Korea, where the contribution of Korean War veterans who dedicated their lives for the peace of the country is often overlooked, one organisation is working hard to widely publicise and record their noble deeds through memorial ceremonies, campaigns, and events.
Since 2015, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group has held the 'Love Your Country, Share Peace' campaign nationwide every June, which marks Patriot & Veterans Month, in order to raise civil awareness of war veterans who died for the peace of Korea (notably those of the Korean War) and to promote a world of peace without conflict.
Since January 2024, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group John Tribe (a branch of the Shincheonji Volunteer Group) has been consistently carrying out the 'Hyeonchungbogam' sub-campaign to promote the patriotic facilities in Incheon, which is home to 49 memorial facilities.
The 'Hyeonchungbogam' campaign came about as a result of an Incheon-based survey targeting citizens on the 'Awareness of Memorial Facilities in Our Neighbourhood,' in which less than one-third of respondents admitted to knowing about the existence of 'two or more memorial facilities' in the region.
Accordingly, through the 'Hyeonchungbogam' campaign, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group John Tribe began communicating on a regular basis with citizens by installing signboards that provide information on the Veterans of the Month selected by the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs and a map of cemeteries in the Incheon area; producing a booklet detailing 49 cemeteries in the Incheon area to more accurately inform citizens about the cemeteries; and conducting activities to inform citizens about the memorial facility and write messages of gratitude to the fallen.
A man in his 70s who participated in the 'Hyeonchungbogam' campaign on the 26th June this year said, “Activities that promote the awareness of cemeteries and allow people to feel gratitude towards the spirits of those who have protected their country help establish an exemplary foundation of a healthy society.”
Meanwhile, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group plans to continue actively informing future generations about the value of the nation's memorial facilities.
