Volunteers from the Eastern Busan Branch of the Shincheonji Volunteer Group are cleaning a rainwater drain during an environmental clean-up activity held on the 16th July

On 16th July, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group Eastern Busan branch ("Eastern Busan Branch") conducted a rainwater gutters cleanup for the prevention of urban flooding in Beomil neighbourhood (Busan City, South Korea) which is prone to flooding due to the low-lying area and frequent clogging of the rainwater drain.

On that day, 47 members of the Eastern Busan Branch prevented sewer clogs by removing litter, including a high number of cigarette butts, and fallen leaves caught in the rainwater drains near the Kookmin Bank building. Volunteers amassed waste that filled three 50-litre waste refuse sacks (equivalent to approximately 60kg).

This activity was further enhanced by a campaign to reduce microplastics, with volunteers distributing promotional materials on how to reduce microplastics in daily life.  One citizen said, I was shocked to hear that cigarette butts end up in the ocean and become microplastics, adding, I'll tell everyone around me.

Meanwhile, this campaign is part of the Eastern Busan Branch's regular environmental cleanup volunteer programme, which has been conducted once or twice a month since 2024 during the hottest months of the year (May to August).
