Shincheonji Volunteer Group Repairs Flood Damage in Jinju After Record-Breaking Rainfall in South Korea

South Korea endured historic rains in the summer of 2025, with flooding and landslides that displaced over 10,000 people and caused widespread infrastructure damage. As soon as the skies cleared, temperatures soared into the mid‑30s °C, making both cleanup and recovery especially difficult.
Amid that challenging period, Shincheonji Volunteer Group stepped forward in affected regions like Jinju, Cheonan, Asan, and Seosan, bringing hope and practical help to those struggling to rebuild. This article looks on the volunteer effort in Jinju City.
Following torrential rains of over 120mm per hour that poured down across Jinju City, there was widespread damage such as river overflow, road damage, and submergence of farmland. As a result, a total of 427 residents from 19 townships and districts in Jinju were evacuated.
On the morning of the 19th July, 50 members of the Jinju branch of the Shincheonji Volunteer Group showed up with shovels, brooms, and mops, carrying out restoration work in the the river around the flooded vinyl greenhouses. Floating waste mixed with crops, causing serious damage.
The following day (20th), after the heavy rain subsided, despite a heat wave warning in effect since the morning, some 50 volunteers worked tirelessly in the sweltering heat to collect debris from the flooded farmland, one by one.
A villager who witnessed the scene expressed his gratitude, saying, “I was heartbroken looking at the devastated farmland, but I'm so touched that you're here to help. Thanks to you, it's so much cleaner.”
Meanwhile, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group’s work in Jinju is a reminder of the vital role that grassroots volunteer groups can play in rebuilding local infrastructure, protecting lives, and providing emotional support during emergencies.
