“Religious oppression must never happen in our country”, Chairman Lee of Shincheonji Church of Jesus Urges Government and Related Officials to Ensure Peace and Harmony for All
"Religious oppression must never happen in our country. I sincerely ask the government and relevant authorities to ensure that such things never occur."
ManHee Lee, the Chairman of Shincheonji Church of Jesus, made these remarks on October 30th, during a graduation ceremony held at the Shincheonji Cheongju Church.
These remarks followed an administrative decision that has sparked international controversy, raising concerns about religious freedom and causing substantial financial loss.
Originally, the Zion Christian Mission Centre of Shincheonji Church of Jesus, in partnership with the Association for Buddhist National Unification of Korea had planned to hold a ‘Religious Leaders Forum and Graduation Ceremony’ at Imjingak Peace Park in Paju, South Korea, on 30th October.
However, on October 29th, the day before the event, despite over 30,000 foreign dignitaries and graduates from 57 countries, including 1000 religious leaders representing Christianity, Buddhism, Islam, and Hinduism, having already arrived in Korea, and tens of millions of Korean Won spent on event preparations, a sudden decision to cancel the booking was made without prior communication or consultation.
The background to this decision is thought to involve other religious groups who oppose and persecute Shincheonji Church due to its rapid growth, as well as the influence of the political circle.
Despite the sudden cancellation, Shincheonji Church of Jesus proceeded with the graduation ceremony at Shincheonji Cheongju Church for the overseas members and domestic and international religious leaders who had come to Korea for the event.
At a press conference held at Shincheonji Cheongju Church, Chairman Lee emphasised during a meeting with reporters, “Separation of politics and religion is clearly stated in our country’s Constitution,” and, “Even those in power should not disregard the law.”
Chairman Lee stated, “Our country, which was once poor and struggling, has endured much hardship and suffering. But now, we are a prosperous nation. Wouldn’t it be even better if our nation became one that is recognised by God?” He continued, “Therefore, I ask for everyone’s help in making our country one of love, without division, where we can all live together in peace.”
The incident has reignited international debate about religious freedom and tolerance in South Korea.
