Religious and humanitarian organisations including IndependentFromBeliefs, Center for Studies on New Religions (CESNUR) and the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) have challenged the groundless accusations made against Shincheonji Church of Jesus (hereafter Shincheonji Church) by media throughout South Korea. In a tweet (posted above), USCIRF has urged the South Korean government to stop scapegoating Shincheonji Church for the rise in confirmed domestic cases of COVID-19 and to respect religious freedoms. Investigations prove that Shincheonji Church hadn’t been connected to the coronavirus outbreak until South Korea reported its 31st case on February 18th 2020; a 61-year-old South Korean woman who had no prior overseas travel history or contact with other confirmed cases. Lies published by the media intensified existing anti-Shincheonji sentiment within South Korea, leading to the deaths of two church members unable to withstand persecution from their own families and workplaces.
