COVID-19 Countermeasures, General Assembly Headquarters, Shincheonji Church of Jesus

Greetings, fellow citizens. We are Shincheonji Church of Jesus.

We deeply regret that many Shincheonji believers and citizens have been infected with “COVID-19,” which has caused great concern to the public. Shincheonji Church of Jesus is cooperating with health authorities through all means to prevent the spread of “COVID-19.”

Shincheonji Church of Jesus has announced to all 245,000 Shincheonji believers - including 9,294 believers in Shincheonji’s Daegu Church and 201 recent visiting believers to the Daegu church - to refrain from outside activities.

Shincheonji Church of Jesus provided an initial list of church members who had all gathered in one place for evening worship service to the Daegu Metropolitan Government following confirmation of "Patient 31" on the 18th, and also provided the final list to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) on the 19th, at 6am. In response to the additional confirmed cases, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) requested a full list of all believers at Daegu church on the evening of the 19th, which Shincheonji Church provided on the 20th.

Currently, 9,294 believers in Shincheonji’s Daegu Church have been quarantined, and all believers in Shincheonji Church have been examined for “COVID-19.” Since the 18th, all church activities including meetings, worship services and evangelism has ceased. Shincheonji Church has been checking up on believers who exhibit symptoms similar to “COVID-19” and is closely communicating with the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC).

Moreover, as of the 18th of February, Shincheonji Church closed 1,100 churches and affiliated institutions throughout Korea when the first patient was confirmed in the Daegu church, enforced disinfection measures up until the 21st, released the current disinfection and prevention status, and provided the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) with the addresses of all churches and affiliated institutions on the 22nd. This was disclosed on the official website of Shincheonji Church for all citizens to verify for themselves.

Moreover, Shincheonji Church identified 201 believers who had visited Daegu church from the end of January to February 18th, instructed them to be isolated, go into quarantine and inform their health center, and also provided a list to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC), Seoul Metropolitan Government (Gyeonggi Province) and other local governments.

According to data published by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) at 9am today, 309 of all 556 “COVID-19” patients are affiliated to Shincheonji Church of Jesus. In order to minimize infection spread to the community, Shincheonji Church has been closely communicating and engaging with the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) by checking symptoms of all believers of the Daegu church and those who had visited the church in person.

Furthermore, together with health authorities, we continually contacted 670 unresponsive members of Shincheonji Daegu Church - 417 of whom were examined and 253 previously unreachable because of long-term absence contacted through all means possible.

Shincheonji Church of Jesus is now making every effort to work together with the government and public health authorities to prevent the spread of “COVID-19” and is responding with full force in every way. Since early January and in order to protect believers, the General Assembly Headquarters of Shincheonji Church issued four official mandates ordering all 74 churches nationwide to ban visitors to and from China, those in close proximity to visitors from China, and contact with people with fever or cough-like symptoms, and has banned all gatherings since the 18th of February.

Shincheonji Church of Jesus is fully informed of, and responding to, the public’s concern about "COVID-19" but it cannot help but be concerned about the deliberate and continual slanderous reports that "Shincheonji Church is intentionally concealing this situation."

Shincheonji Church of Jesus is in close communication with health authorities and is committed to seeing an early end to this crisis. Please stop the speculative and unconfirmed malicious reports about Shincheonji Church.

In order to bring an early end to this situation, the entire list of believers of Daegu Church has been handed over to health authorities, but this list has been leaked and unlawful things have happened to believers of Shincheonji Church including forced leave, discrimination, insult and even pressure to quit their works.

Believers of Shincheonji Church are Korean citizens who have been living their daily lives following disinfection measures imposed by the authorities, and are now victims of "COVID-19".

"COVID-19" is a disease that originated in China and has spread to South Korea. We sincerely ask the public to be aware that Shincheonji Church of Jesus and its believers are the biggest victims of "COVID-19" and to refrain from any hateful or groundless accusations against believers of Shincheonji Church.

The current situation must be resolved in cooperation with the government and all citizens, including Shincheonji Church of Jesus. Once again, Shincheonji Church will cooperate with all our might to bring a swift end to this crisis. We also urge you once again to take this opportunity to actively cooperate with the authorities.

We hope that this situation winds down as soon as possible and we wish patients a speedy recovery.
Thank you.

Related to New Coronavirus Infection (COVID-19):Q&A against Fake News about Shincheonji Church of Jesus

Q. Does Shincheonji Church of Jesus encourage its believers to hide their attendance at worship service and do missionary work?
A. Not at all. The General Assembly Headquarters of Shincheonji Church called for an immediate ban on all meetings, worship gatherings and access to its churches throughout Korea after it was confirmed that a believer in Shincheonji’s Daegu church had been infected with COVID-19 ("Patient 31") on 18th of Feb. An official order was sent to all branch churches to replace all worship services with collective worship services online.

The Daegu branch of Shincheonji Church also immediately closed its church and mission centers and banned all meetings, missionary work and contact between church members after verifying the 9am news about "Patient 31". The church in Daegu then conducted an epidemiological survey according to guidelines issued by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) and Daegu Metropolitan Council. And it took action asking all believers throughout the church to isolate themselves and it carried out medical examinations for believers with symptoms.

The General Assembly Headquarters instructed all Shincheonji believers by text message that anyone who had visited the Daegu church isolate themselves and all believers refrain from outside activity, and promptly inform public health centers of any signs of fever.

The “False Response Manual”, which rumors in circulation identify as a “Notice from the Ministry of Liaison & Public Relations of the church in Daegu,” is in reality neither an official guideline issued by Shincheonji’s General Assembly Headquarters nor Shincheonji’s church in Daegu. The church in Daegu issued all its guidelines and provided full cooperation with the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) and other organizations upon their visit to their church at 9am.

The notice was sent in writing by a believer from Daegu church with personal judgement. After this was confirmed, Shincheonji Church corrected it and immediately punished the believer.

The General Assembly Headquarters sent a request to all churches throughout Shincheonji that they follow these guidelines without applying their own judgement and cooperate with health authorities to prevent such an incident from happening, as had occurred on the 19th Feb.

To date, Shincheonji Church of Jesus has repeatedly stated that it will adhere to government policy and has cooperated with epidemic prevention authorities throughout. Shincheonji Church prays for the swift recovery of all infectees - including Shincheonji believers - and is actively working to end this current national crisis.

Q. Doesn’t Shincheonji Church of Jesus cooperate with health authorities?
A. This is false. Health authorities have requested data on certain infectees according to legislation on infection disease control, and Shincheonji Church of Jesus has actively cooperated. Shincheonji Church delivered a list of all its Daegu church believers to health authorities, as well as a list of all believers who had visited the church to each local health center.

In addition, Shincheonji Church of Jesus had identified all visitors to its church in Daegu of their own accord and instructed them to isolate themselves and inform their public health center. Shincheonji Church has shared this situation with local governments throughout Korea.

Prevention and management of infectious diseases is a very important issue that is directly related to the public’s health and is linked to social anxiety caused by fear of infection. In accordance with the guidelines of health authorities, Shincheonji Church has actively cooperated to minimize the possibility of infection spread to the community by allowing a thorough investigation and diagnosis, and by faithfully acting according to the results of the diagnosis and epidemiological investigations.

Q. Did the individual in quarantine ("Patient 31") assault a nurse and riot while Shincheonji believers congregated to make a fuss?
A. Such content has been spread to online forums and messaging systems since the morning of the 19th, but it’s simply not true. Infectees in quarantine are isolated according to infection prevention laws; if they do not follow the law, they can be fined up to 3 million won. The hospital nurse also confirmed that this was fake news. Moreover, it is impossible congregating to make a fuss outside Daegu Medical Center, which is currently closed.

Q. Are believers of Shincheonji Church of Jesus not actively being examined?
A. Shincheonji’s church in Daegu is providing a list of all its believers to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC), and plans to undergo gradual testing and conduct of a full investigation. Believers throughout Shincheonji’s churches in South Korea - not only members of Daegu church - and those with fever have been advised to contact their local health center.

The General Assembly Headquarters is placing the health and safety of believers and the community as top priority. Please refrain from unconfirmed speculative reports.

Q. Did Shincheonji Volunteer Group go to Daenam Hospital in Cheongdo to carry out volunteer work and transmit COVID-19?
A. Shincheonji Volunteer Group has never visited Daenam Hospital in Cheongdo.

Q. Did "Patient 31" go to the funeral home in Daenam Hospital, Cheongdo, and spread the COVID-19?
A. She visited Cheong-do in early February, but she has never visited Cheongdo’s Daenam Hospital.

Q. Did Chinese believers attend the funeral of the brother of Chairman Man hee Lee at Cheongdo’s Daenam Hospital?
A. This is not true. Shincheonji Church is currently trying to identify those believers who attended the funeral (at 16:00 on the 21st of February).

Q. Does Shincheonji have a church in Wuhan, China? Didn't they visit South Korea?
A. In the case of overseas churches in Shincheonji, those with more than 120 believers after having begun missionary work are raised to the administrative status of a 'Church.' Because of religious oppression in China, the church is named 'Wuhan Church,' but there is no actual meeting place or church building. And since 2018, we've been bringing all our meetings and services online. Moreover, the entire city was sealed off in January, so there is no permitted access to South Korea.

Q. Is it true that 340 to 800 believers of Shincheonji Church have gone into seclusion and avoided contact with health authorities?
A. All believers of Shincheonji Church of Jesus are complying with the guidelines issued by health authorities. There can be some delays because of personal circumstances or sequential contacts. Shincheonji Church has repeatedly asked believers to comply with the direction set by the health authorities and their respective health center.

Q. Seoul Metropolitan Government and Gyeonggi Province have announced that they will close Shincheonji Church and all related institutions.
A. Shincheonji Church has closed down all its branch churches and mission centers across the country since the 18th and has disinfected them until the 21st of February.

Q. Video footage is circulating of a confirmed patient escaping from an isolation ward and striding down the street. Is this true?
A. This is not true at all.

Q. Is it true that COVID-19 spread because of the special worship culture in Shincheonji Church of Jesus?
A. The temple in Shincheonji Church of Jesus does not differ from ordinary places of worship and the worship culture is not so different. Please refrain from speculative reports.

Q. Is it true that orders came down from Shincheonji Church telling believers not to attend services in Shincheonji Church this week, but to go to the established church and spread COVID-19 and make it an issue not limited only to Shincheonji Church?
A. This is completely groundless. From the 18th of February, the General Assembly Headquarters closed churches nationwide and instructed them to have collective worship services online. In addition, all the believers of Shincheonji Church are prohibited from gathering, evangelizing and meeting other believers. All believers are now complying with the health authorities' guidelines as faithfully as possible. In response to the spread of such disinformation on social media and the wider community, Shincheonji Church of Jesus will take strong legal action and hold them responsible for spreading false information.

Shincheonji Church of Jesus (full name Shincheonji Church of Jesus, The Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony) is the church promised to appear in the Bible; specifically within the book of Revelation, which is a book of promise about future events that will take place. Shincheonji Church of Jesus is an abbreviation of “Shin-cheon-shin-ji” - the Chinese characters for “New Heaven New Earth” - promised in Revelation 21. It is not a literal new heaven and new earth, but a figurative one; a new kingdom ('heaven') and new people ('earth') born of the seed of God, which is His word (Luke 8:11).

The process of the creation of this promised New Heaven New Earth began in the time of the Old Testament prophets. In Jeremiah 31:27, God promised through Jeremiah's lips that He would sow His seed in the future. This promise was then fulfilled at the first coming by Jesus Christ (Matthew 13), who sowed God's seed in believers' hearts. Jesus also promised to return to harvest the fruits of God's seed (word) he sowed (Revelation 14). These firstfruits are being harvested today, sealed with the words of the Bible and created as the promised new kingdom and new people. The promise of Revelation has already begun to be fulfilled in the Republic of Korea (South Korea) and is spreading like wildfire throughout the world, as evidenced by Shincheonji Church of Jesus’ recent graduation ceremony of 103,764 graduates of all ages and backgrounds from 113 nationalities. All students completed an intensive six-month Bible study course at Shincheonji Church of Jesus’ Zion Mission Center, which is its Bible-teaching institution. Let's look more deeply at what the Zion Mission Center curriculum offers.

Introductory
This is an introduction to the four categories of the Bible (history, instruction/teachings, prophecy and fulfillment) and teaches the true meaning of the parables. Jesus spoke about the secrets of the Kingdom of Heaven in parables (Mt 13:10-11) and said that one must understand them in order to receive forgiveness of sin and receive salvation (Mk 4:10-14). Jesus also said that, when the time comes, the parables must be explained plainly (Jn 16:25). This course enables one to clearly understand the meaning of the parables and seal them in one’s heart.

Intermediate
This covers the major events of the Bible from Genesis to the prophets to the four Gospels, up until the penultimate book of the Bible, which is the book of Jude. It teaches students about some of the prophecies of the New Testament and how to differentiate between that which has been fulfilled (fulfilment) and is yet to be fulfilled (prophecy). Students are taught to categorise time, place, and characters correctly.

Advanced
Many different teachings on eschatology - the 'end times' recorded in the book of Revelation - are taught by many different pastors today. Some pastors teach that the number ‘666’ is a barcode, that the red dragon represents communism, that the beast with 7 heads and 10 horns represents the European Union, or that there will be an impending 'rapture'. However, these are all interpretations ('rapture' does not appear anywhere in the Bible). The Bible clearly says that anyone who adds or takes away from the book of Revelation will not be able to enter heaven (please read Rv 22:18-19).

Understanding the correct meaning of the book of Revelation is, therefore, of paramount importance. Students are taught about the meaning of the prophecies and fulfillment of the entire book of Revelation and, ultimately, God's overall plan to restore this broken world, return to His creation and end all death, mourning, crying and pain (Rv 21:4). It is God and humanity's greatest hope - a world of paradise - that will be fulfilled. Those who believe and keep this promise, at the time when this fulfillment is being made known (i.e. today), will receive salvation and become the kingdom and people of God - the New Heaven New Earth.

On 8th February 2020, Break News published an article entitled 'Shincheonji Volunteer Group's Eastern Seoul Branch Distributes 500 Disposable Hand Sanitizers for Corona Prevention'. This is a translation of that article.

Volunteers from Shincheonji Volunteer Group, Eastern Seoul Branch, distributed 500 hand sanitizers to the public in Nowon District, Seoul, on February 11th and 14th to prevent the spread of the corona virus.

Hand sanitizers, in low supply due to the recent spread of the coronavirus, have been difficult to acquire, even in pharmacies. In response, Shincheonji Volunteer Group distributed hand sanitizers to support citizens who are fearful of infection of the coronavirus.
In addition, Shincheonji Volunteer Group shared hand sanitizers and carried out their 'Natural Purja' environmental cleanup initiative, which collects street garbage on main roads and at shopping centers near Nowon Station.

One citizen who received the hand sanitizers said, “At a time when hospitals and public institutions are closed, people who really need help are not getting it. I'm pleased that practical help is being provided to citizens in these difficult times."

On the other hand, Shincheonji Volunteer Group's Eastern Seoul Branch continues to provide hope to the community and serves as a light through steady volunteer activities including environmental cleanup initiatives, blood donation, and mural painting.

On 21st November 2019, Daily Leaders published an article entitled ‘100K Graduation Fever Evident at Open Bible Seminar in Busan’. This is a translation of that article.

2 tribes in Busan, 4,000 people gather at the Open Bible Seminar
Continual Requests for follow-Up Open Bible Seminar Made after Chairman Man Hee Lee's Open Bible Seminar on the Second Coming and Harvest

(▲On 6th November the Open Bible Seminar was held at Shincheonji Church of Jesus’ Andrew Tribe Zion Mission Center (left) and Busan James Temple (right). In the photo, the guest speakers are Myeong-seok Choi, Thaddeus tribe leader (bottom left), and Jae-sang Lee, Thomas tribe leader. [Photo = Provided by Shincheonji Church of Jesus]

Shincheonji Church of Jesus' graduation ceremony (Chairman Man Hee Lee; hereafter Shincheonji Church of Jesus) for '100,000 fresh graduates' was simultaneously held in three venues domestically and in 112 venues overseas on November 10th. Fever from the graduation ceremony continued on in Busan.

Shincheonji Church of Jesus' Busan James tribe and Andrew tribe, which covers regions including Busan, Ulsan, Gyeongnam and Jeju, held their Open Bible Seminar for 1500 and 2,500 guests, respectively, on November 16th.

The Open Bible Seminar on the Second Coming and Harvest led by Chairman Man Hee Lee last month in Busan - East Busan (Andrew tribe) and West Busan (Busan James tribe) - was followed by the 12 Tribes' Open Bible Seminar.

Guest speakers Myeong-seok Choi and Jae-sang Lee spoke at the 12 Tribes' Open Bible Seminar at Andrew Tribe's Zion Mission Center and Busan James' Temple, respectively, on the theme 'Promised New Kingdom New People of the New Testament: Creation of the 12 Tribes' and 'Work of the Holy Spirit and Elementary Truths of God's Word'.

Myung-seok Choi, Thaddeus tribe leader, said, “God prophesied about the sowing of His seed, and promised to return to carry out the work of harvest after His seed was sown by Jesus. Jesus has returned 2000 years later and is harvesting those born of God's seed to Mount Zion today. Those who have been harvested are sealed with the revealed word of God and create the 12 tribes - the promised kingdom of the New Testament. The place where the promises of God and Jesus are fulfilled is New Heaven New Earth.”

Jae-Sang Lee said, “When perfection comes, everything we know in part will be known fully. And perfection is seeing face-to-face. Revelation must be fulfilled to attain perfection. The new work promised at the Second Coming is the creation of the 12 tribes - the new heaven and and new earth - where God, Jesus and heaven come down and become one. This is a perfect place."

One pastor who attended the conference confessed that it possesses "irrefutable Biblical teaching", adding, "I was amazed at the words that were being explained purely through scripture, without personal opinions or judgment. Just as the New Testament testifies to the reality of the Old Testament at the time of Jesus' first coming 2000 years ago, the New Testament also testifies in detail about the prophecy and fulfillment of the book of Revelation. The process is the same. All Christians should listen to this word. After today's event, this should be properly confirmed and actively discussed."

Sang-hee Kim, who attended the recent Open Bible Seminar in Busan, said, “I felt that the word was different from that of the existing Church. As the seed is the word, I realised that the place where the sons of God are gathered is this new kingdom here."

The lecture was publicised in response to a flood of inquiries about Shincheonji Church of Jesus following the success of the Chairman's nationwide 'Open Bible Seminar on the Second Coming and Harvest'. In fact, since last month's Open Bible Seminar, more than 60,000 people have enrolled for online Bible study. Accordingly, for two days from the 15th to the 16th, Shincheonji Church of Jesus' 12 Tribes' Open Bible Seminar was held with visiting lecturers, and attendance from thousands on the themes of the New Testament including the Harvest, End of the Age, New Covenant, Judgment, Tree of Life, and the Counsellor.

On the 22nd and 23rd, the head of every branch of Shincheonji Church of Jesus will hold their respective Open Bible Seminar nationwide throughout their regions. In particular, Chairman Man Hee Lee will be keynote speaker at the Open Bible Seminar in Jeju Island, scheduled for the 19th.

A Shincheonji Church of Jesus official said, “I would like to actively promote this word so that no one will say they have not heard about Revelation, which is the promise of the New Testament. It is up to the individual to believe. Everyone understands and believes that this is what God wants and the duty we have received. If the book of Revelation is fulfilled, don't simply say 'it's a cult'. Become a sincere believer who checks and discusses the word meticulously."

It is a common belief that God intentionally gives hardship to help us grow. Is this true? God allows hardship to help Him fulfil His promise. He does not give us hardship when we are outside God's purpose and plan. Let’s take a look at the story of Joseph.

13 Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved and mistreated there. 14 But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions.” (Gen 15:13-14)

Roughly BC2500, God appeared to Abram (later Abraham) in a vision promising him that his descendants would be slaves in a foreign land not their own but after 400 years would come out with great possessions. Abraham, who left his homeland and settled in Canaan, was the father of Isaac, who was the father of Jacob (later renamed 'Israel'). Of Jacob's twelve sons his second youngest, Joseph, was to his brothers’ envy Jacob’s most loved because he had been born to him in his old age.

Aged 17, Joseph told his father and brothers about a dream where he saw the sun, moon and eleven stars bowing down to him. His brothers all took offence at him though Jacob, who knew of God’s promise through his father and grandfather (Isaac and Abraham), “kept the matter in mind” (Gen 37:11).

One day, as Joseph was on his way to meet his brothers in the fields, dressed in his father's ornate robe, they seized him, threw him into a well and sold him into slavery in Egypt. His brothers brought his ornate robe that they had intentionally covered in goat’s blood back to his father who, fearing the worst, mourned deeply for days, refusing to be comforted. It was an undeniably tragic experience for the young man and father. Why did Joseph have to endure such hardship?

While in Egypt, one of the officials of the king of Egypt (Pharaoh) named Potiphar bought Joseph and put him to work. However, because God was with Joseph and “gave him success in everything he did” (Gen 39:3), Joseph was quickly put in charge of Potiphar’s household. Nevertheless, this positive turn-of-events was short-lived after Potiphar’s wife made false accusations against the well-built and handsome young man. Joseph was thrown into prison.

Joseph, through his God-given gift, interpreted the dreams of his fellow prisoners - Pharaoh’s cupbearer and chief baker - speaking very positively of the cupbearer’s dream. Joseph urged the cupbearer to tell Pharaoh about the injustices he had suffered being forcibly dragged from his homeland to this foreign land in Egypt. But the cupbearer “did not remember Joseph; he forgot him” (Gen 40:23). Surely Joseph would have felt crushed, trying to make sense of everything, as he lay confined in prison.

Hearing of Joseph's ability to interpret dreams, Joseph interpreted Pharaoh's dreams of seven years of abundance followed by seven years of famine and Joseph grew in stature, being placed in charge over Egypt (Gen 41:39-40). Following a famine in Canaan, Joseph's brothers and father moved to Egypt where an abundance of grain was stored and Joseph eventually revealed his true identity to their disbelief (Gen 45).

Seventy of Joseph’s family members - his eleven brothers and their children - had moved to Egypt. Joseph died (Gen 50) and his descendants multiplied and grew in number in Egypt until they were brought out under Moses' guidance to enter the promised land of Canaan.

God's promise to Abraham about the 'country not their own' was Egypt and the 'great possessions' was the land of Canaan. God had to take Joseph and his family out of Canaan to the land of Egypt to then conquer Canaan. Exactly 430 years after God's promise to Abraham, the Israelites were taken out of Egypt, as recorded in Exodus 12:40. (Note: the first 30 years was the time needed for Joseph's family to settle there). In conclusion, all the hardship Joseph experienced was all to fulfil God's promise to Abraham.

Today, there is a clear promise that God has made with believers in the Bible, as recorded in the four Gospels and book of Revelation. Unlike Joseph, we have the privilege to clearly know the reality of this promise and, with a willing and persevering heart, we can freely learn this promise.

Many believers call Abraham the 'father of faith'. Why? Is it just because he believed in God? Abraham did indeed believe in God, but more importantly he believed in God's promise. Belief in someone else is proven through that person fulfilling their promise. Let's see how that is demonstrated through the story of Abraham.

Abram was 75 years old when he was commanded by God to leave his homeland of Harran and go to a foreign land (Gen 12). Abram obeyed, letting go of everything he had been accustomed to all those years, and taking with him his wife Sarai, nephew Lot, and some possessions (they had no children). Despite his relatively old age and fear of the unknown, he obeyed God's calling.

A short time later, God came to Abram in a vision and promised him that he would have a son born from his own flesh and blood from whom descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky would come (Gen 15). Abram believed in God's promise and walked faithfully with God.

However, as time passed, his wife Sarai, who was ten years his junior and well past child-bearing age, grew despondent, though she knew of God's promise. She pressed Abram to sleep with her maidservant Hagar in the hope that she might raise a child through her. Hagar conceived and gave birth to Ishamel.

When Abram was 99 - 25years after God made the promise - God again appeared and told him to be "blameless" (Gen 17:1). Abraham had wavered in his belief and bore Ishamel, who was not the child of promise. God then reaffirmed his promise, telling him that Sarai would bear him a son one year later in her old age. Abram laughed to himself. Nevertheless, God who always fulfils what He promises, gave them a son one year later whom they named 'Isaac', meaning 'he laughs',according to God's command. Surely Abraham would never have forgotten God's faithfulness every time he called his son by name.

Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!”
“Here I am,” he replied.
Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.” (Gen 22:1-2)

The child of the promise whom Abraham and Sarah had waited for 25 years was asked to be sacrificed. Why? And how can a supposedly loving God make such a demand? Would someone walking in obedience to such a command not be considered psychotic and, at the very least, be sectioned in a psychiatric ward in today's day and age?

Yet Abraham got up "early the next morning" and obeyed God's command. On the pretext of making a customary offering to God, Abraham and his son walked up Mount Moriah - wood, fire and knife in hand - to make the intended burnt offering. (A burnt offering in the time of the Old Testament was typically performed on a sheep or lamb whereby their flesh was ripped apart and burned with fire). As Abraham lifted his hand to strike his son dead, an angel stopped him and God acknowledged him. Abraham obeyed God, believing that God could even raise Isaac back from the dead to fulfil His promise because God always fulfils His promise (Heb 11:17-19).

Faith is "confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see" (Heb 11:1). Abraham had true faith because he knew God's promise and, in spite of his many physical setbacks, kept it, believing that God would fulfil regardless. Without faith it is impossible to please God (Heb 11:6).

Today, there is a clear promise that God has made with believers, as recorded in the four Gospels and the book of Revelation of the New Testament. Do you know what this promise is?
