On 3rd December 2022, Cheonji Ilbo (Cheonji Daily) published an article in Korean, entitled, “Shincheonji Youth Volunteer Group 'We Are One' sets world record with 73,807 blood donations”. This is a translation of that report.

(Photo) A total of 73,807 people donated blood for 85 days from August 27th to November 27th to overcome the blood supply shortage in South Korea, said the youth volunteer group 'We Are One'. A total of 100,360 people participated in the blood donation campaign, which is the largest group blood donation ever. [Cheonji Ilbo = Correspondent Hye-ji Lim] Amid repeated blood shortages every winter in South Korea, the largest recorded blood donation by 70,000 youth volunteers has been completed in time for the start of the winter season.

As the blood supply shortage is ongoing due to COVID-19, the youth volunteer group We Are One (Director Jun-su Hong) launched a blood donation campaign with the goal of making 70,000 blood donations from August 27th to November 27th, in time for the start of the winter season. A total of 73,807 people successfully gave blood over 85 days. 100,360 people participated in the blood donation campaign, which stands as the largest group blood donation effort on record.

We Are One began planning the group blood donation campaign last summer in order to resolve the severe national blood crisis that resulted from factors such as the drop in blood donors due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic. To prepare for the winter season, along with the summer and Chuseok holidays, when blood supplies typically fall, We Are One members proactively donated blood with the goal of 70,000 blood donations by November.

In particular, We Are One challenged the world record with the ambition to inform the world of the value and importance of saving lives through donating blood and to attract participation. Within 24 hours on October 1, 71,121 volunteers registered online as successful blood donor applicants. This record is 7 times larger than the previous world record of 10,217 (8 hours) set in India, and entered the Guinness Book of World Records.

We Are One members across South Korea participated in blood donations at blood centres located in 17 metropolitan and provincial governments across the country, and 70,000 blood donations were completed on the 27th, before December, as planned.

We Are One focused on matching the situation of the blood centre with individual schedules in order to effectively donate blood to a large number of people in a short period of time. Members also showed their best efforts to solve the blood shortage crisis by paying special attention to health management measures and making efforts to avoid the chances of being disqualified for a blood donation.

In fact, in order to achieve the goal of '70,000 blood donations before winter comes', about 100,000 We Are One members across South Korea joined the campaign in search of blood centres over the past three months.

Jun-soo Hong, Director of We Are One, said, “Donating blood is the only means of saving the lives of patients who are in need of blood transfusions and it is a valuable service.” “We Are One will continue to donate blood in the future to overcome the blood supply shortage and strengthen the community foundations.”

Meanwhile, 'We Are One', a youth volunteer group, was launched on July 30th as a volunteer group composed of young people from Shincheonji Church of Jesus. It is one of the largest youth service organisations in the world, with 90,000 domestic and foreign youth members (70,000 in South Korea and 20,000 overseas), with a total of 12 branches in South Korea and 75 countries including the US and UK.

In order to repay the grace of life they received from God and Jesus, the youth volunteer group revealed that their goal is to practise the biblical values of truth, love, and peace.
