Shincheonji resounds throughout the global village - “100,000 graduates”, “20 million views” and “A surge of educational requests”

 

On 7th July, Cheonji Ilbo (Cheonji Daily) published an article in Korean entitled, “Shincheonji resounds throughout the global village - “100,000 graduates”, “20 million views” and “A surge of educational requests'”. This is a translation of that report.

It has been pointed out that the number of students at the Zion Christian Mission Center operated by Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony, exceeded 100,000 in the first half of this year. [Cheonji Ilbo = Correspondent Hyeji Lim] Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony (Shincheonji Church of Jesus) has become the subject of considerable attention both in Korea and abroad with various seminar series that explain the entire Bible, including one on the book of Revelation entitled 'Testimony on Prophecy and Fulfillment of Revelation, God's New Covenant'.

Although the number of Protestant members in Korea is in rapid decline, the Zion Christian Mission Center, operated by Shincheonji Church of Jesus, has attracted 100,000 students in the first half of this year alone, and the YouTube Bible education content of Shincheonji has surpassed 20 million views. It has also been reported that thousands of churches in Korea and abroad are flooding Shincheonji with inquiries requesting the dispatch of Bible education materials and lecturers.

◆ In the first half of the year, 100,000 students were enrolled on the centre course
According to Shincheonji Church of Jesus on the 6th, from January to June this year, the number of newly enrolled students at the Zion Christian Mission Center exceeded 100,000. Specifically, there are a total of 91,000 domestic (Korea) and 35,000 overseas students, and as of today, 105,000 students are enrolled. In particular, the number of seminary students and pastors enrolled in classes has increased significantly compared to last year. This comes in stark contrast to the Christian churches, which are facing a crisis as the number of their members has plummeted since the outset of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID -19) pandemic.

In response, an official from the Zion Christian Mission Center said, “Since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak, we immediately stopped the offline center and transitioned all educational courses online.”


◆ Introductory, intermediate and advanced Bible Seminars surpassed 22 million views
The online Zion Christian Mission Center operates an online Bible education curriculum that divides the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation into introductory, intermediate, and advanced courses. As a result, anyone from non-religious people with little to no knowledge of the Bible to seminarians and pastors can take a variety of courses. All courses are offered free of charge, and group study and 1:1 training are also provided after lectures.

Analysis suggests that one of the reasons for the growth of Shincheonji Church of Jesus is the large increase in the number of people curious about its doctrine. Prejudices were shattered and a spirit to 'listen and judge for yourself' was formed when coming into direct contact with the doctrine of Shincheonji Church of Jesus through its various seminars on the Word that were released to the public through YouTube.

In fact, various educational video content by Shincheonji Church of Jesus has recorded an overwhelming number of views. The Zion Christian Mission Center's introductory, intermediate, and advanced seminar videos, which were uploaded to the official YouTube channel of Shincheonji Church of Jesus twice a week since October of last year, has surpassed 22 million views as of today. During this period, the number of subscribers grew by more than 60,000.

Among the seminar videos, the lecture with the highest number of views was on the 'Book of Revelation', an advanced course taught at the Zion Christian Mission Center. The number of registered views was highest for Revelation chapter 1 (720,000 views), followed by Revelation chapters 2-3 (510,000), and Revelation chapters 4-5 (470,000).

As there is virtually no teaching on the book of Revelation in the Protestant world, it is not only believers but also pastors who have shown great interest in the seminar series.

◆ Pastors rush for information on Shincheonji
While it is true that pastors are reluctant by nature to attend face-to-face seminars and receive education from other denominations and churches, a Shincheonji Church official explained that the seminar series on the Book of Revelation proved to be an exception and has received considerable attention from pastors in Korea and abroad.

What is also noteworthy about this online seminar is the evidence of Shincheonji Church of Jesus' strong Bible education and its skilled lecturers. The entire seminar series consists of ▲ 24 introductory lectures,▲ 24 intermediate lectures, ▲ 20 advanced lectures , and ▲ 5 special lectures.

Overseas, requests for educational materials and the dispatch of lecturers have continued, and currently over 3,600 pastors, churches, and seminaries have signed memorandums of understanding (MOU) to deliver this education to their congregations.

◆ Pastors: “The Revelation Seminar was a Shock”
Among the attendees who came in contact with the Word through the lecture, the most common response to it was 'outstanding'. Pastor Park, who has been pastoring for 40 years, listened to the lecture and said, “Excellent lecturers, these lectures must go on”, and, “You can’t preach such a sermon in a general church.”

Another pastor named Pastor Kim, said, “This Word is true. Others will not be able to deny it.” He said, “I realised that I have to listen and judge for myself, and not blindly label them a cult.”

Pastor Park, who is the head of an established church, confessed, “I was shocked to hear the lecture on Revelation chapter 1 by Chairman Lee.” He said, “This was not the Shincheonji Church of Jesus that I had been hearing of.”

A pastor who watched all the videos said, “It has not been easy listening to the entire course of Shincheonji Church of Jesus.” He said, “I know that a lot of pastors around me are also watching it,” and, “I feel that Shincheonji’s Bible education can never be emulated by established churches.”

An official from Shincheonji Church of Jesus said, “Non-religious people, those who are just developing an interest in the Bible, and individuals who want to learn the Word in depth take classes at the Zion Christian Mission Center, but elders, seminarians, and pastors feel burdened by this and tend to prefer to watch YouTube lectures.” He said, “After watching YouTube lectures, more and more people are requesting private Bible training courses or textbooks, and are looking for a variety of training courses.”

◆ Good deeds, such as blood plasma donation and group blood donation, also played a part
Furthermore, publicity of the sincere social volunteer activities of Shincheonji Church of Jesus, such as participation in a group blood plasma donation for the development of a treatment for COVID-19 and a group blood donation, is commonly known to have contributed to the surge of the number of students. Contrary to the existing critical viewpoint of Shincheonji, which has been met with general antipathy, the deeds of Shincheonji Church of Jesus members, who are at the forefront of social volunteer activities and lead exemplary home lives, have become prominent and more and more people have requested classes. According to a Shincheonji Church official, students say, “I will experience it and judge for myself.”
