On 17th October 2022, Cheonji Ilbo (Cheonji Daily) published an article in Korean, entitled, “New Guinness World Record set by Shincheonji Youth Volunteer Group We Are One with '70,000 blood donations'”. This is a translation of that report

[Cheonji Ilbo = Reporter Hyeji Lim] A Korean youth volunteer group has set a world record by registering over 70,000 blood donors in 24 hours.

Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony (Shincheonji Church of Jesus) youth volunteer group 'We Are One' announced that 71,121 volunteers had completed online blood donation applications within 24 hours on the 1st October. With this, We Are One entered the Guinness Book of World Records, setting a record more than seven times the previous world record of 12,217 (8 hours) set in India.

We Are One, which is conducting its 'Life ON Youth ON' blood donation campaign, announced that it has carried out its Guinness World Record Challenge to promote the importance of donating blood to overcome the blood crisis caused by COVID-19.

According to data from the 2018-2021 blood donations issued by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the number of designated blood donations by patients who are battling various illnesses to directly rescue blood donors has increased dramatically as blood supply has become low due to a decrease in the general blood donation volume over the past three years. In particular, from 2020 to 2021, patients experienced great difficulties in finding blood donors as there was a blood supply crisis owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Recently, as the number of patients looking for designated blood donors on social media has rapidly increased, We Are One has launched a large-scale campaign called the '70,000 blood donation challenge'. The purpose of this campaign is to inform the public that blood shortages still remain, even though COVID-19 is fading, and to encourage the public to donate blood.

A total of 70,000 volunteers signed up to donate blood online across every slot from 8:00am on October 1st to 8:00am on October 2nd through 'Red Connect', the official blood donation application of the Korean Red Cross. The computer team at the Blood Management Headquarters of the Korean Red Cross checked the servers etc., so that other blood donor reservations would not experience any inconvenience due to the Guinness World Record challenge being set on that day and to avoid any issues with the general blood donation application. Thanks to their active support, a total of 71,121 youth volunteers of We Are One completed the online blood donation registration within 24 hours.

Guinness World Records, which carefully reviewed the record by mobilising two witnesses, approved the world record on the 13th. It has been said that the process of conducting and reviewing the large-scale event was not easy because 70,000 volunteers applied through the app at the same time.

We Are One, who planned the Guinness World Records Challenge, said, “The key was to schedule and spread out the 70,000 applications and proceed smoothly so that there would be no errors due to a system overload. It worked. It would not have been possible to achieve this record without an earnest desire to share life through donating blood.”

A volunteer who participated in this challenge said, “I practised to ensure that this challenge would not fail because of my complacency and set an alarm so that I could log in on time. It is a simple task on an individual level, but it is not easy for 70,000 people to keep their promises from their respective positions, and the server had to stay operational without any issues. I was desperate not to miss this opportunity.”

Jun-su Hong, Director of We Are One, said, “This challenge has been carried out to inform the public about the crisis among patients who are suffering due to blood shortages amid the global COVID-19 pandemic, and to raise awareness and participation in the value and importance of giving blood to save lives globally. This goes beyond a mere listing in the record books.”

Director Hong said, “It was possible not only because of the volunteers, but also the Korean Red Cross officials who have been working at the forefront to address the blood crisis, and the firm that developed a convenient blood donation app. COVID-19 can be defeated when we are all one.”

We Are One, a youth volunteer group, was launched on July 30. From the time of its inception, We Are One has been carrying out a '70,000 Blood Donation' campaign since August 27, which is indicative of the number of its members in Korea. As of the 16th October, a total of 67,147 people have taken up the challenge, and 47,706 people have successfully completed their blood donation. The goal is to secure 70,000 blood donations by November.
