Amid the growing public interest following the controversy over the raising of the Japanese flag on March 1st, a Taegeukgi (Korean national flag) garden was created at the heart of Daejeon city in celebration of the 78th National Liberation Day of Korea.

Shincheonji Daejeon Church (Director Bang-sik Jang) of Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony, raised various national flags in the garden in front of the church on the 8th August to celebrate National Liberation Day. The church stated that it wanted to provide an opportunity to awaken the spirit of love for the country along with the beauty of the Taegeukgi to citizens passing by.

In addition, a time was organised to inform citizens visiting the church about the meaning of Liberation Day, the meaning of Taegeukgi, and the raising of the national flag.

Mr. A, who visited the church, said, “It was an opportunity to think about our country and love for the country at a time when the meaning of Liberation Day is fading.”

Head lecturer Bang-sik Jang said, “Liberation is the restoration of light, and Liberation Day commemorates the return of our land and the sovereignty that had been taken away by Japan. We hoisted the Taegeukgi with the wish for a better future.”

He continued, “I hope that every house will hoist the national flag on this National Liberation Day out of love for the country.”

On the other hand, Daejeon City is conducting the Taegeukgi-raising vitalization project to promote the value of Taegeukgi by encouraging the raising of Taegeukgi on national holidays and anniversaries. This includes painting large Taegeukgi on the exterior of each apartment and a Taegeukgi gift presentation policy for newlyweds. In addition, Taegeukgi sales counters are being installed in the city, district civil service offices and all administrative welfare centres.
