Safeguarding Senior Patriots Amid Extreme Seasonal Heatwaves
With global meteorological agencies warning of unprecedented summer heatwaves, protecting the health and living conditions of vulnerable elderly citizens has become a major regional safety priority. This necessity is particularly acute for Korean War veterans in their 80s and 90s, who often face physical limitations in managing household hygiene and seasonal preparation. To express civic gratitude and offer direct health support, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group Pocheon Branch implemented its specialised "Wise Summer Living" outreach project on 1st and 6th August, targeting Korean War veterans and their families in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province.

Pocheon Branch: On-Site Home Repair and Heat Wave Management for War Veterans
Across two days, the Pocheon Branch visited nine war veteran households:-
- Home Repair: Volunteers removed dust accumulated inside the air conditioners and filters in each household and checked their operation.
- Heat Wave Management: Volunteer medical personnel advised senior veterans on proper hydration, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, and managing chronic conditions such as hypertension and diabetes during extreme weather.
- Hydration Relief: Following the health check-ups, fresh watermelons were served to help the attending veterans cool down and stay hydrated.
- Letters of Gratitude: The letters delivered by the volunteers were written by citizens as part of last month’s “Love for Country, Sharing Peace” patriotic event, expressing their gratitude to national merit recipients. The Pocheon branch said the letters conveyed the heartfelt appreciation of citizens who continue to remember and honour the sacrifices and dedication of Korean War veterans.

More Than Supplies—Acts of Connection
The day wasn’t just about items—it was about presence.
Volunteers offered services, helping the senior veterans feel refreshed and cared for.
“I suffered a lot because I joined the war at a young age,” said Mr. Ki-won Lee (90), adding, “I am grateful that you remembered the sacrifices I made back then and came to visit me in person.”
The families of the war veterans also expressed their appreciation to the volunteers. One veteran’s daughter said, “I was unaware that there were volunteer activities where people personally visit veterans’ homes and even clean their air conditioners.” She added, “I am truly grateful that they took the time to come and help despite the sweltering heat.”
Volunteer Mi-jeong Lee (55) reflected: “It broke my heart to see the elderly veterans struggling to make ends meet in the scorching heat. I will try to visit them often in the future.”
Spreading Community Value and National Remembrance
A representative from the Pocheon Branch highlighted that the project served a dual purpose: spreading a refreshing culture of community sharing during peak summer heat while providing a meaningful opportunity for everyday citizens to actively remember the sacrifices of 6·25 Korean War veterans.
