In a time when traditional markets face mounting economic pressures, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group has taken a proactive stance to breathe new life into local commerce. Across Gyeonggi province, the Guri and Namyangju branches recently spearheaded coordinated efforts to support market merchants, demonstrating a profound commitment to community solidarity and economic revitalisation.
Guri Traditional Market: Reinvigorating Commerce via the 'Market Shopping' Campaign
Guri Traditional Market is one of the area’s representative traditional markets, with a history spanning more than 60 years since its beginnings as an alley market. Today, approximately 390 shops are in operation, and the market was officially designated as an accredited market in 2005. It has since grown into a major commercial hub, attracting around one million residents from Guri City and neighbouring areas.
To provide comfort and practical support to market merchants facing the challenges of the prolonged heatwave and economic downturn, while also revitalising the struggling commercial district, the Guri and Namyangju branches mobilised 38 volunteers at Guri Traditional Market for a dynamic "Market Shopping" campaign on 11th August.
- Direct Economic Impact: Volunteers actively purchased local produce, stimulating immediate cash flow, and distributed promotional kits to citizens, encouraging them to frequent traditional markets and increase physical foot traffic within the market. Volunteers also provided ice water to street vendors working in the sweltering heat, while offering words of encouragement and support.
- Community Feedback: Local vendors expressed immense gratitude. One fish shop owner who received iced water noted, “I am grateful that people continue to remember the market merchants and take the time to share their warmth and support, even in such hot weather. I hope more citizens will visit and support our traditional market, where they can experience both the lively spirit of the market and the warmth of the community.”

What makes these activities remarkable is not just their immediate impact, but their sustained nature. Both branches have emphasised that these are not sporadic events but part of a long-term strategy to ensure traditional markets remain a vibrant heart of the community.
“Our goal is for this spirit of sharing to empower merchants and inspire citizens to rediscover the unique value of traditional markets,” stated a representative from the Guri-Namyangju Branch.
By bridging the gap between volunteers and local businesses, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group continues to prove that organised compassion is a key driver for regional prosperity.
