Shincheonji Volunteer Group’s activities: Q1 2019

by - 16:02

Shincheonji Volunteer Group (SVG) is the ‘volunteer wing’ of Shincheonji Church of Jesus (hereon ‘Shincheonji church’). It is the largest non-governmental national organisation operating in the Republic of Korea with well over 100,000 volunteers serving in disaster relief, blood donation, Korean War veteran support (6million), and regional development and public service campaigns in 67 of the 84 cities in South Korea. Shincheonji church volunteers spread the love of God through continual care for the isolated and vulnerable. SVG has received national recognition through 70+ awards given by governmental, civic and private organisations in Korea. Today I’d like to provide readers with a brief overview of SVG’s activities in Q1 2019, with the full link to an article detailing their work provided below😊

On Korean New Year's Day (February 5th), Shincheonji Volunteer Group (SVG) delivered various home-made dishes including stir-fried pork, seasoned bean-sprout and an assortment of meat to elderly residents living alone in Cheongju through its ‘Pink Cloth with Love’ programme. Mrs. Ok-soon Kim said: "The meals were so delicious and I let my neighbors know," adding, "I’m always excited to eat these meals, remembering how I felt opening my lunchbox on a picnic day as a child. Thank you so much."💗
On 23rd February, SVG’s ‘Door2(to)Door Healthcare’ programme provided medical aid to 50 underprivileged local residents in Seoul often exempt from receiving medical aid. Recipients benefited from oriental medicine, dental treatment, diabetes treatment, hand massage, body posture and ear acupuncture. Special talks aimed at improving mental health were also set up and delivered to youth.

This was followed by another 'Door2Door Healthcare’ programme event in Busan on 30th March for the benefit of 40 war veterans. SVG also signed an M.O.U. with the Association of Korean War Veterans to further improve veterans’ health.
As forest fires ravaged swathes of eastern Korea in early April, an environmental protection campaign that reinforced the meaning and value of Arbor Day was held in Cheonan city on 5th of April. The campaign commemorated the sacrifice of Korean forefathers who rebuilt the country during the 1970 Saemaul Undong Movement following the aftermath of Japanese colonial rule and the Korean War. The campaign also underlined the importance of cultivating nature on a daily basis, and not just on Arbor Day.

One SVG representative said, "Volunteering has to come from the heart. We can't force people to volunteer. Shincheonji volunteer group focuses on showing 'love' - like the light, rain and air that falls from the sky - 'light' that shines in dark and isolated places and 'peace' that transcends borders, race and religion.”

These are just a few of many voluntary works carried out by SVG during the first quarter of 2019. SVG is also active overseas. From 8-11th March, SVG provided medical aid to nearly 500 orphaned children and blind residents in isolated towns and villages in Vietnam
