“The best time to donate blood is always now. If I've the opportunity, I'd like to give the gift of life again and again.”

This is the pledge of a young volunteer from the Eastern Busan branch of We Are One, a youth volunteer group, who came out to donate blood despite the summer heat in August, South Korea.

According to the Korean Red Cross Blood Management Headquarters, the months of January, February, July and August are the most difficult periods for blood supply. Moreover, the number of blood donors in South Korea in 2022 was 2,445,003, which when compared to the blood donation rate, is a very low figure representing 4.8% of the estimated national population of 51.6 million. Blood reserves are, therefore, always insufficient.

In response, 2728 people of the Eastern Busan branch and 1404 people of the Western Busan branch of We Are One, totalling 4132 youth volunteers, participated in blood donations from July 21st to the end of August as part of the 'We Are Red' 2023 Life ON Youth ON blood donation campaign to resolve blood supply shortages and practice life sharing. This campaign follows on from the life-sharing donation made in 2022.

Mr. A, who participated in donating blood for the first time, said, “This is just the beginning. I plan to participate in blood donations frequently if it means saving lives.

Shin-mo Kim, head of the Eastern Busan branch, said, “It is unfortunate that the blood supply shortage has not been resolved. Blood cannot be produced artificially, so the need for blood is even greater.”
