Shincheonji Church’s Bible study sees massive popularity in South Korea
A growing number of news agencies
are publicising the rapid growth of Shincheonji Church of Jesus, The Temple of
the Tabernacle of the Testimony (hereon ‘Shincheonji church’) in South Korea,
following the success of its nationwide ‘The Book of Revelation: Open Bible
Seminar’ which drew in a staggering 50,000 participants, May-June 2019.
The
purpose of this nationwide series of seminars was to inform the public about
the correct understanding of the Bible and address misunderstandings about
Shincheonji church. The majority of the 50,000 participants registered for
further study at one of Shincheonji church’s 300 Zion Christian Mission Centers
worldwide, which teaches a six-month Bible study programme for free. Although
2018 experienced 20,000 people hungry for true understanding of the Bible, this
figure already stands at 30,000 for 2019. Moreover, according to Shincheonji
church’s ‘May 2019 Zion Mission Center Registration Report’, a record 150,000
people have already registered to begin studying this year.
Gyeongbuk
Daemin Daily and Dekyung Ilbo (links below) reported on the impact of the
seminars held simultaneously in Daegu and Pohang in April, contributing to a
60% increase in registration of the Zion Mission Centers from an average
monthly intake of 500-800 students. Moreover, the impact of the seminars held
in many cities in the region has contributed to a significant growth in
Youngnam with 2300 students completing the six-month Bible study programme this
year and 6500 registered to begin study this year. This is truly remarkable in
a region which has a Christian population of only 10%. Local pastors have even
cited it as a ‘modern-day revival of the New Acts’.
To
meet this growing demand, Shincheonji Church of Jesus has doubled the number of
its Zion Mission Center branches and resource capabilities nationwide.
