“It's wonderful that young people are doing this kind of work, and it feels like new life has been breathed into the market.”
On the 26th July, youth members from the Shincheonji Andrew Church conducted an environmental 'plogging (jogging + litter cleanup)' campaign, which included a distribution of heatwave prevention kits and frozen water, around the Pyeonghwa Market and Jayu Market in Beomil neighbourhood, Busan City, Republic of Korea. Market vendors and residents responded positively to the volunteer effort, and expressed their experiences above.
Roughly 20 members of the Shincheonji Andrew Church who participated in the volunteer activity were divided into teams and took the lead in cleaning up the environment by picking up cigarette butts, plastic, and household waste from various street areas. They then personally distributed "heat prevention kits" containing ice-bottled water and heat-related safety tips to citizens and local shop owners visiting the market amidst the stifling heat, creating a warm bond.
A church representative said, “Heat-related illnesses can be prevented by following three basic rules: shade, water, and rest,” and added, “We hope this campaign builds stronger bonds in our community and helps everyone stay healthy throughout the summer.”
Meanwhile, this water-sharing event, which was designed to foster mutual prosperity with the local community and protect the environment, was conducted until the heatwave warning was lifted and the heat subsided.
