As spring approaches, volunteers from the Shincheonji Volunteer Group Guri-Namyangju Branch carried out a major street-cleaning effort around the commercial district on 11th March 2026, improving safety and walkability for local residents.
◆ A Cleaner Morning in Dasan
Early that morning, the commercial area in Dasan neighbourhood looked noticeably cleaner. Over a dozen volunteers walked through narrow alleys and busy corners, removing built-up litter, fallen leaves, cigarette butts, and cans and bottles lodged in flowerbeds.
Volunteers also used information boards to inform citizens about the environmental impact of cigarette butts, and the damaging effects of microplastics emitted from cigarette butts.
Moreover, they disseminated 'Cigar Wraps,' a tool for sealing and collecting cigarette butts, and held a campaign to prohibit illegal dumping.
◆ Local Residents Appreciated the Effort
Commuters immediately noticed the difference.
Firefighter and passerby Jeong-sun Lee (63, female, Namyangju), said, “There are a lot of cigarette butts discarded on the roadside, so I think campaigns like this are frequently needed.”
◆ A Busy, High-Traffic Area Needing Constant Care
Because the commercial district is surrounded by an underground station and residential blocks, thousands pass through daily. Narrow market alleys near the underground station often receive complaints about illegal waste disposal.
For such areas, environmental cleanup is more than beautification — it helps prevent slips, falls, and other seasonal accidents.
◆ Commitment to Year-Round Care
An official from the Volunteer Group noted that the team will continue providing support:
“We will continue to carry out cleanup activities and environmental awareness campaigns to improve the local community environment.”
