Shincheonji Volunteer Group's Support for Struggling Business Owners in Seoul, Korea
In line with government regulations, Shincheonji Volunteer Group (SVG), which is the volunteer wing of Shincheonji Church of Jesus (Shincheonji Church), has continued to serve communities throughout the Covid-19 pandemic in South Korea.
SVG's Seoul-Gyeonggi branch, which covers the areas of Goyang, Seodaemun, Paju and Namsan, has been supporting small business owners throughout the prolonged Covid-19 pandemic through consistent Covid prevention measures. Small business owners, who are struggling to keep businesses afloat and unable to procure professional sanitisation and disinfection cleaning services, have found the twice-a-week cleaning services of SVG Seoul-Gyeonggi "very helpful". The benefits have been particularly felt by business owners in Paju which has seen a rise in confirmed cases of Covid-19.
Sanitisation and disinfection measures carried out by volunteers of SVG Seoul-Gyeonggi in shopping centres in Goyang have led to an increasing number of companies requesting their services as they meticulously clean and disinfect despite Korea's scorching summer heat.
A representative of SVG Seoul-Gyeonggi said, "We hope that our sanitisation and disinfection service becomes a source of support and strength for the local community at this time when COVID-19 continues to spread ceaselessly."
SVG Seoul-Gyeonggi volunteers from Namsan said, “Every time shopping business owners watch the news related to Covid-19 in Seoul, they begin to worry about another cluster outbreak, but their expressions brightened a lot after our service. One owner of a drug store refused our service because he didn't like our name, but after seeing what was going on at a nearby store, he asked for help because he recognised our sincerity.”
A few kilometres away, SVG's Eastern Seoul branch has been carrying out weekly COVID-19 prevention measures since September 2020 at 77 shopping centres in and around Junggye and Sanggye neighbourhoods, Nowon district, to support small businesses affected most by COVID-19.
Since the beginning of 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic began in earnest, 212 SVG volunteers in 68 locations have been carrying out voluntary Covid prevention measures for a total of 65 days.
In other Shincheonji-related news, 3741 congregants of Shincheonji Daegu Church, who had contracted Covid-19 and recovered, donated their blood plasma over three rounds in an effort to help develop treatment for COVID-19. Of this figure, 1561 donors donated their blood plasma more than twice. Mr. Jun-wook Kwon, Deputy Head of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), expressed his gratitude to donors in person back in November 2020, saying, "This blood plasma donation by believers of Shincheonji Church, who have now recovered from COVID-19, will make an indelible contribution to overcoming this pandemic and, eventually, eradicate it. We hope that the voluntary and active example set by Shincheonji Church members today will serve as an example to all citizens". Earlier this year, the KDCA confirmed that it is expected to secure blood plasma treatment by the end of 2021; a step that could potentially alleviate the suffering of many Covid sufferers in Korea and beyond.
Shincheonji Volunteer Group will continue to put love for its neighbours into practice through various cultural and volunteer activities, having partnered with 72 national and international volunteer agencies to serve marginalised communities in Korea, improve road networks, implement environmental clean-up campaigns, cook and deliver homemade lunches and provide beauty services and mural painting.
