First Covid vaccine in Korea “is possible thanks to the donation of blood plasma by Shincheonji members”

On 12th July, Cheonji Ilbo (Cheonji Daily) published an article in Korean entitled, “First Covid vaccine in Korea 'is possible thanks to the donation of blood plasma by Shincheonji members.'” This is a translation of that report.

[Cheonji Ilbo, Cheonji TV = Reporter Ji-ye Lee· Hyo-shim Seo] The novel coronavirus infection pandemic has been ongoing for three years and has been possible to endure because of the sacrifice and dedication of the whole nation that required a bloody devotion.

Thanks to blood plasma donations from those who recovered in the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic, the first COVID-19 vaccine has now been developed in Korea.

These donors were those who silently participated in the plasma donation, while enduring all kinds of social and political criticism at that time.

These people are the members of Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony, who first received national attention following the outbreak of the initial confirmed case of Covid-19 in February 2020.

With their plasma donation, the development and research of this vaccine has paid off, and they also conducted a large-scale blood donation campaign to address and resolve the national blood crisis that arose due to the prolonged pandemic.

It is a well-known fact that the blood plasma donated by these people, who recovered from COVID-19, has had a profound effect on the development of the first domestic COVID-19 preventive vaccine.

“The great efficacy of this vaccine would not have been possible without the blood plasma (donated by Shincheonji believers). Those who donated (plasma) went to the Korean Red Cross to make a blood donation, even though there is only a machine in the Red Cross. Their donation was possible because they had their blood drawn by this machine. It's not easy to do that in a hospital, because there are restrictions on the amount of blood that can be donated.

The blood plasma used to develop the vaccine was donated by members of Shincheonji Daegu Church in 2020.

Their donated plasma has been used to develop a treatment for COVID-19 and research of mutant viruses, and in this process, it has been used in vaccines clinical trials.

Shincheonji members also played a major role in resolving the domestic blood supply crisis.

This blood supply crisis continued until April 2022, with blood reserves far below the required 5-day blood supply.

This led to an unexpected record, certified by the Korea Record Institute, for 'the largest number of blood donors by any single institution in the shortest period of time.'

A total of 18,819 people participated in the 17-day group blood donation campaign and they gifted 32,324 blood donation cards and vouchers, which was also certified as an official record by the Korean Record Institute.”

“As a Shincheonji member, there were so much persecution and negative news following the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic, but in the midst of that, the Chairman of Shincheonji Church said, 'be a light to the world, and share if you can.' Moreover, blood is life. Seeing how the members of Daegu Church donated plasma after they had fully recovered from coronavirus really touched my heart. To be frank, I was told that donating plasma itself is really challenging, and not an easy task.

(With regards to donating blood) I honestly didn't think the members could do that much, because the coronavirus pandemic was ongoing and there were some things we had to be cautious about, but in the midst of that, we, Shincheonji members, volunteered commendably by giving our blood.”

The blood plasma of Shincheonji members will continue to be used to develop vaccines and therapeutics for domestic pharmaceutical companies. In addition, Shincheonji Church of Jesus has said that it will continue to fulfil its role as the light of society, with another possible blood donation in the future.

The perception of people of faith, who are healing the world through acts of giving and devotion despite their suffering and wounds, is exemplary.
