On 5th March, the Western Busan branch of the Shincheonji Volunteer Group mobilised over a dozen volunteers for a 'Plastic Zero' campaign to restore the coastline of Gwangalli Beach in Busan.
Gwangalli Beach has experienced growing sanitation concerns driven by increasing tourism and insufficient waste management, with food and household waste left mixed together and abandoned on the beach, despite the installation of recycling facilities throughout the beach.
Answering the call among displeased local residents, the Western Busan branch divided volunteers into teams and cleared the beach for more than two hours. By the end of the activity, they had collected an estimated one ton of waste. The cleanup effort was conducted alongside plogging — a fun and meaningful activity where participants jog while picking up litter.
One tourist who witnessed the cleanup expressed gratitude:-
“This beach is one of Busan's landmarks. Seeing volunteers working so hard was impressive. Thanks to them, the beach looks much cleaner, and I hope it continues to be maintained like this.”
With one ton of waste cleared in just one day, the volunteers’ effort shows how community-driven action can make a visible difference for both the environment and the people who enjoy it.
Meanwhile, the Western Busan branch of the Shincheonji Volunteer Group has been promoting environmental campaigns and public awareness activities for the success of the various upcoming Expos since last year.
