[Cheonji Ilbo = Reporter Hye-in Choi] Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony (Shincheonji Church of Jesus, Chairman Man-hee Lee), which has radiated hope through a large-scale blood donation amid a blood supply crisis during the Covid-19 pandemic in Korea, has set a new domestic record.

Shincheonji Church of Jesus announced on the 16th that it had been awarded a certificate from the Korea Record Institute for the “largest number of blood donors by any single institution in the shortest period of time” following its 16-day group blood drive held from April 18 to May 4. In addition, the 32,324 blood donation cards and vouchers that donors received were donated to others, setting the record as the 'largest blood donation in history'.

A total of 18,819 members of Shincheonji Church of Jesus participated in this group blood donation, which has been officially certified as the largest donation by the Korea Record Institute. According to the Blood Management Headquarters of the Korean Red Cross, this blood donation equates to 3.5 days of blood reserves, and provides nearly four times the amount of blood needed for 5,400 people a day.

To designate this certificate, the Korea Record Institute received a copy of the final blood donation, a list of donors, and a gifted donation certificates from Shincheonji Church of Jesus, and officially declared the donation a new record following verification by the Korean Red Cross' Blood Management Headquarters.

The nationwide group blood donation conducted by Shincheonji Church of Jesus is evaluated to have contributed greatly to resolving the national blood supply shortage that had resulted due to the spread of the coronavirus Omicron variant.

Shincheonji Church of Jesus waived their rights to the blood donation cards and vouchers, and gave them to the Korean Red Cross' Blood Management Headquarters at Nambu Blood Centre in Seoul last month.

The Blood Management Headquarters will support the request for the blood donation cards and vouchers to be gifted to alleviate the financial burden on patients who have received blood transfusions during surgery or treatment, and the transfer of blood donation rights will also be made to aid urgent donor initiatives.

An official of Shincheonji Church of Jesus said, “It is meaningful that we, Shincheonji members, can carry out a spirit of love and service for the country in order to solve this national blood crisis. Above all, the record for having made the largest blood donation in the shortest time was possible because of members' determined hearts to share life.”

Shincheonji Church of Jesus announced that 18,478 church members had completed the group blood donation, far exceeding the original estimate of 6000, following completion of the two-week group blood donation from the 18th of last month to the 1st of this month to solve the national blood crisis. Ki-il Lee, 2nd Vice Minister of Health and Welfare, said earlier, “I would like to thank everyone who participated even amid a difficult blood supply situation.”

Hee-young Shin, Chairman of the Korean Red Cross, also said, “I express my gratitude for the noble spirit of the 2.6 million blood donors in Korea.”

In the early days of Covid-19, when there was no vaccine or treatment in 2020,  Shincheonji Church of Jesus, upon the request of the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, participated in a blood plasma donation to develop a treatment for Covid-19. 6,000 of its members donated over three rounds. At that time, despite suffering the aftereffects of Covid-19 and psychological demands, congregants stepped forward to alleviate the national blood crisis, garnering attention not only domestically, but also overseas
