[Cheonji Ilbo = Reporter Kim Bit-na] It is reported that the Korean government is conducting research and development into the fight against the 'mutant virus' of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), which is known to have 1.7 times greater transmissibility than the existing strain.

Research and analysis of 'natural immunity levels' and 'lasting duration' of mutant strains is being carried out through blood plasma donated by a huge number of congregants of the Daegu branch of 'Shincheonji Church of Jesus, The Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony' (Shincheonji). Blood plasma provided by Shincheonji Church members is being used not only to treat COVID-19, but also to study mutant strains.

On the 26th January 2021, Jun-wook Kwon, deputy head of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said, "In the current fight against COVID-19, research and development is incredibly important."

Mr. Kwon said, "Today early morning, an announcement was made regarding the efficacy of the new Moderna vaccine against the mutant strains discovered in England and South Africa. We are also measuring the level and duration of natural immunity against COVID-19 through Shincheonji Church blood plasma donations."

Deputy Head Kwon said, “As the number of outbreaks of mutant strains increase overseas, there is serious concern of the virus spreading into our country. It was reported that the UK's mutant strain has increased infectivity and mortality. Given that the number of domestic cases from outside has increased to 27, the risk of community transmission has also risen."

He added, "The government is strengthening its quarantine border measures and the inflow of visitors, monitoring situations in countries where mutant strains have been discovered; and more strictly managing visitors, infected patients and contacts from those countries.” Mr. Kwon called for strict adherence to quarantine regulations including self-isolation and for cohabiting family members.

Previously 3741 members of Shincheonji Church in Daegu had completed three rounds of large-scale blood plasma donation, accounting for 91.3% of total domestic donors (4096) as of the 15th last month.

In addition, among the members of Shincheonji Church in Daegu, 1561 (41.7%) completed blood plasma donations more than once. In their New Year statement issued on the 4th January 2021, Shincheonji Church said, "We pledge to make every effort possible to eradicate COVID-19 from the global community."

  2. Since so many people donate plasma, it seems that corona treatment can be developed sooner. At first, I was very embarrassed because there were a lot of infected people at Shincheonji Church, but I am glad that I helped develop the treatment.

  7. It is surprising that 91.3% of the donors are believers of the Shincheonji Church. We hope this will lead to the development of a vaccine against the coronavirus.
