An Overview of the Book of Joshua

by - 17:20

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. (Joshua 1:8)

The Holy Bible is a Christian scripture respected by about 2.3 billion people - 29% of the global population. Today, the Bible has been distributed to some six billion people, or 80% of humanity. Yet the paradox is, although being the best-selling book year-on-year, it is considered among the least readable. The book of Joshua is the sixth of the 66 books of the Bible which was recorded after God's prophet, Moses, had recorded the first five books (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy) 3500 years ago. Let's take a look at the sixth of the 39 books of the Old Testament.

Who wrote Joshua?
The book of Joshua is one which records a series of events by Joshua, Moses' successor, which includes the conquest of the land of promise, Canaan (chapters 1-12) and the distribution of land among the Israelite tribes which includes Joshua's farewell address and death (chapters 13-24).

Main characters
Joshua: Joshua was the son of Nun of the tribe of Ephraim, whose actual name was Hoshea. The Hebrew and Greek equivalent of Joshua is Jeshua and Jesus, respectively, meaning "God saves", which was the name given to the son of God at Jesus' first coming.

Caleb: Caleb was the head of the tribe of Judah and one of the twelve spies who, alongside Joshua, scouted the land of Canaan and exhorted the Israelites to invade and conquer it, reminding them that God would fulfil His promise and deliver them in spite of the might of the mighty Canaanites.

Rahab: A prostitute in Jericho who hid and protected two of the twelve scouting tribe leaders in her own home when the king of Jericho sent men in to search for them. Joshua saved the lives of Rahab and her family before capturing Jericho (Joshua 6:22-23) because of her faithfulness to God's people.

Reference Verses
Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, 'We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.‘ (Numbers 13:30)

Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes and said to the entire Israelite assembly, 'The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good. If the LORD is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us. Only do not rebel against the LORD. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will swallow them up. Their protection is gone, but the LORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them.‘ (Numbers 14:6-9)

Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, "Go into the prostitute's house and bring her out and all who belong to her, in accordance with your oath to her." So the young men who had done the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother and brothers and all who belonged to her. They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel. (Joshua 6:22-23)

Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim. 'Go, look over the land, 'he said, 'especially Jericho.' So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there. (Joshua 2:1)
