An Overview of Exodus

by - 20:52

Then the Lord said to him, ‘Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved and ill-treated there. But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterwards they will come out with great possessions. (Genesis 15:13-14)

The Holy Bible is a Christian scripture respected and believed in by about 2.3 billion people, which is 29% of the global population. Today, the Bible has been distributed to some six billion people - 80% of humanity. Yet the paradox is that, although being the best-selling book year-on-year, it is considered among the least readable. Exodus is the second of the 66 books of the Bible which God's prophet, Moses, recorded 3500-4000 years ago. Let's take a look at the second of the 39 books of the Old Testament.
The Exodus symbolises the escape of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt through God's prophet Moses. That very event was the fulfillment of the prophecy (promise) God had made to Abraham in Genesis 15:13-14 (main reference verse above).

The Exodus took place in order to fulfil God's prophecy in Genesis 9:25-27 where Noah's son, Ham, had sinned and Ham's descendant, Caanan, was subsequently cursed. The second generation of Israelites entered the 'promised land' of Canaan under Joshua to fulfil prophecy. The key events in Exodus include the Passover and exodus (Ex12), the parting of the Red Sea (Ex14), the covenant with God through the Ten Commandments (Ex20,Ex24) and idol worship (the 'golden calf' in Ex32).

Main Figures and Events of Exodus
  • Moses: Meaning 'draw out', Moses was named as such by Pharoah's daughter after having been drawn out of the water (Ex 2:10). After growing up as a prince in Egypt, Moses fled to Midian after killing an Egyptian. At the age of eighty, he was called by God and returned to Egypt to lead the Israelites out of slavery
  • Aaron: Moses' brother and helper sent by God (Ex 4:10-17) who betrayed God and sinned by building a golden calf (idol) for the Israelites to worship while Moses was still with God on Mount Sinai (Ex 32)
  • Pharaoh: The title given to the king of Egypt. Although Moses and Aaron continually urged Pharaoh to let the Israelites go, he only relented after God sent the ten plagues on Egypt
  • Jethro: Moses' father-in-law and a priest in Midian. After the exodus, Jethro gave Moses Godly wisdom, advising him to choose capable men who could serve as judges over the people to lighten the burden on Moses
Reference Scriptures
Then the LORD said to him, 'Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years. But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out with great possessions. You, however, will go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a good old age. In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.' (Genesis 15:13~16)

he said,
“Cursed be Canaan!
The lowest of slaves
will he be to his brothers.”

He also said,
“Praise be to the Lord, the God of Shem!
May Canaan be the slave of Shem.
May God extend Japheth’s territory;
may Japheth live in the tents of Shem,
and may Canaan be the slave of Japheth.” (Genesis 9:25~27)

When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh's daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, "I drew him out of the water." (Exodus 2:10)

Moses said to the LORD, 'O Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.' The LORD said to him, 'Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the LORD ? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.' But Moses said, 'O Lord, please send someone else to do it.' Then the LORD's anger burned against Moses and he said, "What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to meet you, and his heart will be glad when he sees you. You shall speak to him and put words in his mouth; I will help both of you speak and will teach you what to do. He will speak to the people for you, and it will be as if he were your mouth and as if you were God to him. But take this staff in your hand so you can perform miraculous signs with it.' (Exodus 4:10-17)
