To combat the COVID-19 virus, 4,000 members of Shincheonji Church who have fully recovered from the coronavirus outbreak last February, have volunteered to donate their blood plasma to the South Korean Green Cross. The plasma donation will be used to assist in the treatment of convalescent plasma and new research.

This month, the Mayo Clinic in the United States discovered that convalescent plasma therapy is secure in a diverse study of 20,000 patients. Shincheonji's plasma donation will help new developments in international research.

"It is difficult to accelerate the development of a COVID-19 vaccine with only 200 recovered patients willing to donate blood," said a South Korean Green Cross official. "The massive donation by recovered patients of Shincheonji Church will resolve this problem of blood plasma shortages for research"

The price that biotech companies around the world have had to pay for just one millilitre of plasma ranges from $35,000-$40,000. This sets Shincheonji’s donation at approximately $83 billion USD.

"This donation is what we want to contribute as a sincere thank you to the government's medical system and staff who worked hard to help our church members recover," said Shincheonji media coordinator Kim Young-eun. The call to donate plasma was encouraged by Shincheonji’s Chairman Man-hee Lee, who requested the cooperation of the congregation through any means possible to resolve the pandemic in South Korea and abroad." I promised to cooperate for the benefit of humanity and the government's policy and conferred with our church members so that the estimated 4,000 congregants who recovered from COVID-19 can provide their plasma to develop a good medicine to solve this infectious disease," said Chairman Lee.

Chairman Lee also sent a letter to thank the members of the congregation in Daegu for their efforts. “I was delighted upon hearing the news of your intent to actively participate in donating plasma (blood) for the development of the vaccine for the cure of COVID-19. I believe that you are the ones who received the blood of Jesus”, said Chairman Lee. Lee stated that he was grateful to the government, which took charge of preventing the spread of COVID-19 and providing treatment for it, clarifying that this was not something that the church could address on its own. He also noted how, when he had heard how many church members volunteered to donate, he saw their devotion as disciples of Christ.

“Our members have received the blood of life of Jesus, the Son of God, and have been freed from sin. Like Jesus, through our blood (plasma) donation, I know that you have gathered your hearts in our collective wish to free all the people of the world from the pains of this disease”, said Chairman Lee. “This is the work that must be done as citizens of this country and as true believers. It is keeping the command of Jesus to loving your neighbour as yourself, and I am thankful that you have gathered your hearts for this good work and in making this decision that is like the light. Let us all pray in the name of Jesus to exterminate COVID-19". The church began efforts to donate plasma in early May through correspondence with blood donation centers and health organisations. Currently, the National Institute of Health and Korean Green Cross have been in communication with the church to plan details. Shincheonji Church hopes that this large-scale donation will encourage other COVID-19 survivors in the United States and internationally to donate plasma as well.
