"COVID-19 Survivors Donate Plasma". Focus on South Korea

by - 17:53

Pindrop posted an insightful short report on July 10th 2020 about the value of the current contribution of blood plasma by 4000 recovering members of Shincheonji Church of Jesus (Shincheonji Church) in South Korea.

With cases continuing to mount in some parts of the world - particularly the US - the report advocates for learning from other countries' handling of the coronavirus outbreak. The report cited one country which regularly tops most coronavirus league tables for its system of testing, tracing and isolation that has kept infections low - South Korea.

Shincheonji Church has provided a full list of attendees for contact tracing measures and over 4000 members who survived COVID-19 are donating their convalescent blood plasma to the Korean Green Cross Pharm as an expression of gratitude to government and local health officials.

“At a time when plasma donations to the Korean Green Cross have been low, Shincheonji Church's contribution is invaluable”, said Green Cross Pharma. With prices of blood plasma from biotech companies around the world ranging from $35,000-40,000USD per ml, Shincheonji Church's donation comes at a value of roughly $83 billion USD and equals 30% of the total confirmed cases in South Korea. In the US, this would be equivalent to 845,286 donations (as of 10th July 2020).

In the US where cases are spiking, many drug manufacturers are struggling to gather resources and in San Antonio, which has almost 13,000 cases - the same number as South Korea - they are yet to find an adequate number of donors and demand is high.

In light of Shincheonji Church's current blood plasma donation by 4000 church members, Chairman Lee said, “I promised to cooperate for the benefit of humanity and the government’s policy and conferred with our church members so that the estimated 4,000 congregants who recovered from COVID-19 can provide their plasma to develop a good medicine to solve this infectious disease.”
