“Shincheonji isn't a bad place at all”, 100,000 Graduation Ceremony Special Photo Exhibition 'Packed'
[Cheonji Ilbo = Reporter Hye-ji Lim] “It was magnificent and fab.” On the 18th, Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony (Shincheonji Church of Jesus) held its 100,000 Graduation Ceremony Special Photo Exhibition entitled, 'The Reality of the Second Coming and Harvest'. It was crowded with people witnessing the events of the graduation ceremony.
Various audiences, from a father in his 50s who came holding his daughter's hand to young lovers and married couples, responded enthusiastically saying, “Honestly, I'd heard about it in words, but it's different seeing it in this way”, “It's nice to see people’s smiles”, and “I'm curious as to how they could have actually gathered like this”. They also listened to the blood group donation campaign and took pictures in photo zones.
On the 20th of November, at Daegu Stadium in Daegu City, a total of 106,186 students took part in the graduation ceremony of Class 113 of Zion Christian Mission Center, a Bible education institution affiliated with Shincheonji Church of Jesus, drawing significant attention from the religious community both in South Korea and abroad. The number of believers in other Christian denominations is rapidly declining due to the impact of COVID-19, but why is Shincheonji Church of Jesus alone continuing to increase by over 100,000 people?
Shincheonji Church of Jesus’ online YouTube seminars, which include the prophecies of the four Gospels of the New Testament Bible and the prophecies and fulfilled realities of the Book of Revelation, has gained great popularity from pastors and churches around the world, and resulted in an increased signing of memorandums of understanding with Shincheonji for Bible education, as well as requests for Shincheonji’s revealed theology materials and the dispatch of Shincheonji lecturers. This is unprecedented.
As such, some say that the COVID-19 phenomenon, which brought pain to Shincheonji, paradoxically served as an opportunity to validate Shincheonji’s revealed theology more objectively. This is closely related to the creation of an online study platform resulting from COVID-19.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Shincheonji Church of Jesus released its introductory, intermediate and advanced (Book of Revelation) theology education materials via YouTube. Analysis shows that the creation of an environment in which students could attend class without being concerned by others has facilitated the rapid increase of the number of pastor and seminary students.
In fact, a total of 522 pastors, 37 in South Korea and 485 overseas, completed the curriculum and participated in the Shincheonji 100,000 Graduation Ceremony, with the proportion of pastors significantly greater compared to previous years.
In particular, this 100,000 Graduation Ceremony, held at a time when domestic concerns about safety are heightened following the Itaewon tragedy, was well received as it ended with zero incidents due to thorough safety preparations taken by the organisers. Above all, the sheer organisational power of Shincheonji is evaluated as 'an event that has not been witnessed in any other organisation'.
On the 18th, at the Shincheonji Graduation Exhibition, held outdoors around Seoul City Hall, the history of the Zion Christian Mission Center, and photos of the 100,000 graduation ceremony portraying its vivid magnitude and awe were exhibited. Through the re-enactment, citizens who could not participate in the event were able to experience the excitement of that day.
Hyeon-joo Yoo (pseudonym, 52, female), who viewed the exhibition while passing by, said, “It seems like Shincheonji has come out of a shell.” She explained, “Although (Shincheonji) had been unable to show itself to the world because of ignorance and persecution by established religious groups, it now seems that they have overcome COVID-19 and shown themselves to the world.”
Soo-jeong Kim (51, female) whom we (reporters) met at the site said, “I'd heard people around me saying ‘Shincheonji is a cult'. It's so beautiful to see all the church members keeping perfect order, united in heart.”
Moon-joo Lee (32, male), who was present at the graduation ceremony itself, said, “What I want to say is that this kind of event has not been put on by any other religious group” and “I hope people will resolve their misunderstandings and prejudices against Shincheonji and look into it.”
Gwang-soo Kim (56) said, “It seems that the grandeur and magnificence of the graduation ceremony has been directly captured by the exhibition.”
The special photo exhibition of the Shincheonji 100,000 Graduation Ceremony was held all over the country, including Seoul, Gwangju, Cheonan, and Jeonju.
Instructor Jeong-woo Lee of Gwangju Church (Peter Tribe) said, “We are delighted to be able to convey the emotion of the day once again through this in-person photo exhibition to those who could not directly witness the Shincheonji 100,000 Graduation Ceremony, which was held according to the promise of the Bible.”
“The reason why so many people are flocking to Shincheonji Church of Jesus is because only Shincheonji has the revealed word, taught based on the 5W1H method, and it is where the prophecies in the Book of Revelation are being fulfilled today,” he said. “I hope you will check the revealed word for yourself and become the main characters of this reality that has become the light of the world.”
