[100,000 Graduation Ceremony] Yet another 100,000 graduates - What kind of place is Shincheonji?

[Cheonji Ilbo = Reporter Hye-in Choi] Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony (Shincheonji Church of Jesus, Chairman Man-hee Lee) is attracting attention as it again held a graduation ceremony for 100,000 people despite being dismissed by the Protestant community.

It comes in stark contrast to the current climate of the global religious community, which has been declining year-on-year amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and attention is being given to the major differences between them and the background of Shincheonji's growth. Unlike the vested interests of the religious world, which is increasingly viewed negatively in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, it has been evaluated that the reason for Shincheonji's explosive growth is due to its 'excellent word'.

In this way, an understanding of Shincheonji, which has shown a miraculous growth of over 100,000 people this year, can be further gained from its official website and existing media interviews. First of all, according to the introduction to Shincheonji published on the official website, Shincheonji was founded on March 14, 1984, and currently has 135 branch churches around the world, including the 12 tribes and its headquarters in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi province.

The official name is 'Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony', which is rather unfamiliar. However, according to Shincheonji, this name is based on the 'Bible', not human interpretation. In other words, Shincheonji is an abbreviation of 'Shincheonshinji', which is written in Chinese characters for 'new heaven and new earth' recorded in Revelation 21:1, and means a new tabernacle and new believers (2 Peter 3:13, Matthew 13:31-32; Revelation 14:1-5; Revelation 15:2-5).

Regarding this, Shincheonji writes, “This is the kingdom of God created by God to fulfill His will on the earth today as it is in heaven. It means that this is a holy temple where God is.”

This means that, just as Moses built the tabernacle on earth based on the vision of heaven shown by God, Shincheonji today was founded by the promised pastor after seeing the kingdom of heaven in the spiritual world.

According to Shincheonji, 'Church of Jesus (Jesus)' means that the head is 'Jesus' as shown in the name of the church. In addition, with regards to the 'Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony', the Tabernacle of the Testimony refers to the tabernacle that witnesses, hears, and testifies to the reality of the fulfilment of the Book of Revelation, and the Temple refers to the holy house where God dwells and is worshipped. The explanation is that the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony is the promised temple (Rev 15:4-5) where all nations will come and be healed and worship the Lord.

The organisation of Shincheonji has 7 education centres, 12 branch tribe leaders, and 24 elders in charge of administration, centred on the General Assembly. Shincheonji explains that this unique organisation is based on the Bible, 'Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10)'.

However, although the name of the denomination and organisation were all done according to the Bible, Shincheonji believers have been persecuted and 'witch-hunted' in various ways because they differ from the existing world of religion and are a minority. Nevertheless, at the time of the outbreak of COVID-19, a large-scale group plasma donation was undertaken to help 'secure plasma from recovered patients', which has proven essential for the development of plasma therapy in Korea. Chairman Man-hee Lee urged Shincheonji believers who recovered to “take the lead in donating plasma so that the blood (plasma) of the congregation members can be used to help Korea and the people overcome COVID-19.”

Since then, a total of three large-scale group plasma donations have been conducted. Plasma from a total of 3741 people accounted for 91.3% of all 4096 plasma donors in Korea as of the end of 2021. In addition to group plasma donations, individual donations by more than 100 Shincheonji believers continued throughout the campaign, with a total of 3,741 people donating blood plasma.

Shincheonji Youth Volunteer Group 'We Are One' registered a total of 71,121 blood donors in 24 hours, setting a Guinness World Record. This Guinness Challenge was carried out to promote the importance of blood donation in order to overcome the blood shortage caused by COVID-19 by We Are One, which conducted the 'Life ON Youth ON' blood donation campaign. In particular, to solve the national blood crisis in this year of 2022, a group blood donation was conducted for about two weeks from April 18th to May 4th. A total of 18,819 believers completed the group blood donation, far exceeding the expected number of 6,000. According to the Blood Management Headquarters of the Korean Red Cross, Shincheonji is the only organisation which has had such a large number of people donate blood in a short period of about two weeks.

In addition, last month, Shincheonji youth volunteer group 'We Are One' set a new world record by registering 70,000 blood donors in 24 hours. It entered the Guinness Book of World Records, shattering by more than seven-fold the previous world record of 10,217 (8 hours) held by India.

Meanwhile, on the 20th, Shincheonji Church of Jesus held the 'Class 113 Graduation Ceremony' at Daegu Stadium in Daegu City. A total of 106,186 people graduated that day, making it the largest graduation by any theological institution in the world. Among the graduates of Class 113, there were a total of 522 pastors, 37 domestic and 485 overseas, who graduated, marking a significant increase on previous years.

At the graduation site, the number of participants in the graduation ceremony was limited to 80,000 in Korea for safety reasons, and over 300,000 people participated in the graduation ceremony both online and offline via YouTube Live broadcast worldwide in nine languages.
