In response to the weakening social fabric caused by economic recession and social conflict in present-day South Korea, Shincheonji Church of Jesus is presenting a new model for community integration through cultural and artistic events.
In particular, over the last three years, the Shincheonji Daegu Church has been hosting cultural and artistic performances, given voluntarily by congregation members young and old.
Performances that have resonated most with the locals include a classical choir, the youth group's pop performances and taekwondo masterclass, experiential booths for calligraphy and Yutnori (traditional Korean board game), which are receiving a great response from families, and the women's group trot performance (a genre of Korean popular music, known for its use of repetitive rhythm and vocal inflections).
Furthermore, the Shincheonji Daegu Church has been holding a ‘Gratitude Appreciation & Sharing’ event every month since February of this year. This event was planned to express gratitude to the citizens of Daegu and the church members’ families who have helped the church grow.
An official of Shincheonji Daegu Church reaffirmed that the purpose of the cultural and artistic performances is to “overcome the emotional isolation in the region and create a place for communication between neighbours.”
