“Thank you for your hard work for the community. From now on, I'll make sure to dispose of cigarette butts accordingly.”

These are the words of a citizen who witnessed a local environmental clean-up campaign by the Eastern Busan Branch of the Shincheonji Volunteer Group, held in conjunction with the local Council and Dong District Volunteer Centre on the 11th August in the Republic of Korea.

The Shincheonji Volunteer Group cleaned the rainwater drain as part of the ‘Green Nature’ environmental campaign that is being held nationwide.

Following the 'Save Dongcheon' campaign held by the Eastern Busan Branch in April this year to address the harmful environmental consequences of sewer backflow caused by the yearly summer monsoon rains, the volunteer group has been cleaning the rainwater gutters around commercial areas on the last Saturday of every month, amassing over 600 litres of litter and 17 litres of cigarette butts.

A volunteer who participated in this campaign on the 11th said, “Even if only one cigarette is littered, others can follow suit, so I will work even harder to clean up the streets.”

Meanwhile, the 'Green Nature' programme strives to pass on a beautiful environment as a legacy to posterity through wetland conservation activities, environmental clean-ups to protect major facilities and cultural assets, environmental recovery, environmental protection public interest campaigns, and the creation of flower paths in illegal waste dumping areas. This is a regular volunteer activity conducted by Shincheonji Volunteer Group throughout South Korea.
