BBC News Broadcasts Report from Seoul, Korea, on Shincheonji Church of Jesus' Second Blood Plasma Donation

by - 20:54

BBC News has broadcast a report on Shincheonji Church of Jesus' second blood plasma donation by 1100 recovered church members. This comes at a time when some hardline evangelical churches are refusing to be tested for coronavirus or to shut their church doors as the capital Seoul goes under lockdown following a surge in cases, even though many new cases are from the ultra conservative church.

On the other hand, immediately following the outbreak in February 2020, Shincheonji Church ceased all gatherings to prevent the further spread of the virus, Chairman Man Hee Lee bowed to the floor twice giving a public apology, and 4000 members expressed their willingness to donate their convalescent plasma. Indeed, to date more than 1700 COVID-19 recovered members of Shincheonji Church in Daegu have successfully donated their blood plasma to help scientists and drug manufacturers find a vaccine for this indiscriminate virus. The initial collective blood plasma donation was made by 628 Shincheonji Church Daegu members from July 13th-17th, followed by a further 1100 donations made at Daegu Athletics Promotion Center from August 27th-September 4th. A total of 4000 donations would, at $35-40,000/ml (assuming 500ml donation each), be valued at roughly $83 billion which is an unprecedented donation by any organisation that has the potential to save millions of lives.

Regarding the most recent donation, Mr. Jun-wook Kwon, Deputy Director of the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) said the following at two consecutive briefings on 27th and 29th August: “With the cooperation of Daegu city, Daegu Athletics Center plans to provide the space, and GC Pharma plans to provide the necessary equipment and personnel from 27th August to 4th September. We express our gratitude to the people who participated in donating plasma willingly to save other patients after recovery. We specifically express our gratitude to the congregation members of Shincheonji, Daegu city for providing a location, and Korean Red Cross.” A Shincheonji Church official said, "We will continue to work closely with the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to make every effort to defeat COVID-19."

Such active participation from Shincheonji Church congregants was encouraged by Chairman Lee who, in a letter dated August 25th, wrote, “Let us lead the effort in plasma donation so that the blood (plasma) of the congregation members who have been atoned for their sins by the blood of Jesus can be used for overcoming COVID-19 for the citizens and the country.”

To date, Shincheonji Church of Jesus remains repentant for the harm and worry caused to Korean citizens amid a rise of cases following 'patient 31' in mid-February. An online prayer meeting was attended by over 200,000 congregation members of Shincheonji Church of Jesus during their Wednesday service on 2nd September 2020 where prayer was given for the government, KCDC and medical staff, infected patients and people who have lost loved ones to this virus, a swift end to COVID-19 and completion of a vaccine, and a call for repentance and forgiveness for any deliberate or undeliberate sin caused by Shincheonji Church members. Shincheonji Church clearly recognises that compassion, love and unity are desperately needed in order to overcome this crisis.
