In September 2022, the coastal city of Pohang suffered the greatest damage in the wake of Typhoon Hinnamnor, which was one of the most powerful typhoons to ever impact South Korea.
In order to help citizens learn disaster response techniques and promote a culture of self-directed disaster prevention, the Pohang branch of the Shincheonji Volunteer Group held its monthly "Safe School" campaign on the 5th September at Yeongil Bay in Pohang.
The campaign on that day raised awareness among people of all ages, from families to youth and seniors, through a total of 5 programmes, including education on typhoon weather, a true or false quiz, design of paracord bracelets that can be used in emergency situations, and packing a survival bag for real life.
A citizen who participated in the campaign said, “I felt lost every time I heard about typhoons on the news, but today’s experience helped me learn what to prepare for and how to act.”
Meanwhile, the Shincheonji Volunteer Group Pohang Branch is committed to working with the community to create a safe community by enabling citizens to independently practise disaster prevention culture.
